Shanghai International Convention Center

The Shanghai International Convention Center is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Shanghai International Convention Center is located next to the Oriental Pearl Radio & Television Tower in Lujiazui, Pudong, and was completed in August 1999. Viewed from the Bund across the river, the convention center features a milky-white exterior that gently supports two massive spheres. The larger sphere has a diameter of 50 meters and a height of 51 meters; the smaller sphere also has a diameter of 50 meters but is only 38 meters high. The contrast between the large and small spheres creates a visually striking effect. The transparent glass on the spheres is assembled into a world map design, symbolizing “Shanghai reaching out to the world.” The total exterior wall area of the Shanghai International Convention Center spans 25,860 square meters and incorporates materials such as microcrystalline silver curtain walls, granite curtain walls, aluminum panel curtain walls, and glass curtain walls, giving the structure a dignified and elegant appearance. The installation of 25 stone column caps, each weighing about 8 tons, further accentuates the building’s grandeur.

Situated in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone and adjacent to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Shanghai International Convention Center faces the historic Western-style buildings of the Bund across the Huangpu River. The entire architectural complex boasts a majestic style, and the design of its two glass spheres is particularly unique and distinctive, adding a touch of East-meets-West flair while reflecting the spirit of the new century. As one of Shanghai’s iconic new landmarks, it was named one of the top ten classic buildings of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The Oriental Riverside Hotel, embedded within the Shanghai International Convention Center, opened in August 1999. It has a total floor area of 110,000 square meters, featuring 260 luxurious guest rooms, uniquely styled dining facilities, a wide range of entertainment and fitness equipment, as well as conference and exhibition venues. The Shanghai Hall, located on the 7th floor of the hotel, can accommodate up to 3,000 people for meetings and is currently the largest pillar-free multifunctional hall in Shanghai. There are also 25 meeting rooms of various sizes to meet diverse meeting needs.

The Oriental Riverside Hotel at the Shanghai International Convention Center has successfully hosted numerous important domestic and international conferences and receptions for dignitaries, including the 1999 Fortune Global Forum, the visiting delegation from North Korea, the 2001 APEC Leaders' Summit and related meetings, the 35th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank, and the 5th APEC Telecommunications Ministers' Meeting, receiving widespread acclaim.

The Shanghai International Convention Center project was invested in by Hong Kong Expo Investment Co., Ltd. and designed by Hong Kong Huafu Engineering Consulting Company. The project is located at No. 2106 Hongqiao Road, Shanghai, covering an area of 2,100 square meters with a construction area of 43,219 square meters. It is divided into a convention center and a hotel. The basement of the convention center covers an area of 4,268 square meters, serving as equipment floors and underground parking with varying ceiling heights between 4.2 and 6.6 meters. The foundation slab uses a reinforced concrete raft foundation, with thicknesses ranging from 1.2 to 1.7 meters (excluding the 120 mm thick bedding layer), and steel reinforcement arranged in upper and lower layers. The concrete usage was 6,317 cubic meters. The design required the entire foundation slab to be poured in a single operation without any construction joints. This foundation slab concrete structure is characterized by its large thickness, massive scale, dense reinforcement, and significant concrete volume.

The Shanghai International Convention Center offers: modern convention venues, including a 4,300-square-meter multifunctional hall (capable of hosting banquets for 3,000 people or conferences for 4,000 people, and also functions as an exhibition space) and a 3,600-square-meter press center (also used as an exhibition space); an 800-person conference hall; two 200-person conference halls; and various-sized meeting rooms for 100 and 50 people; luxurious hotel guest rooms, including presidential suites, business suites, and nearly 270 standard rooms; premium dining facilities, such as Chinese and Western restaurants, specialty restaurants, and cafés; comfortable leisure spaces, including dance halls, gyms, swimming pools, bowling alleys, billiard rooms, saunas, and retail shops, with parking for over 600 vehicles.

The most scenic spots in the entire convention center building are the rooftop garden and the open-air rooftop observation corridor on the 11th floor. The rooftop garden is situated within the massive sphere and is planted with living ornamental trees. The sphere also features an observation platform where visitors can enjoy tea while taking in the views of the Bund and the Huangpu River. The rooftop observation corridor is 100 meters long, with the upper level designated for sightseeing and the lower level for leisure. Both ends of the corridor connect to the spheres.
