Pudong Gaoqiao Riverside Forest Park is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Riverside Forest Park is located at the northernmost end of Pudong New Area, bordering the Yangtze River estuary to the north and the Huangpu River to the west. It occupies Shanghai’s unique geographical position where the Huangpu River, the Yangtze River, and the East China Sea converge.

Highlights

The park’s location is truly unique, acting as a vital link connecting tourist resources in downtown areas, Chongming Island, Hengsha Island, and Jiuduan Shoal. One-third of the park’s area has been fully preserved as a secondary ecological landscape and plant community that gradually formed in the 1950s. To protect these most “pristine” secondary forests while allowing visitors to get close to nature, the park has specially laid wooden boardwalks that take visitors through waterways and forested areas, and has created bird paths, fish passages, and insect corridors. In Riverside Forest Park, you can see over 5,000 azaleas of more than 20 varieties across four series: spring azalea, hairy azalea, summer azalea, and alpine azalea. Among them, the alpine azalea has never been planted in Shanghai before and was sourced from wild mountains elsewhere. The azalea garden here is also currently the largest specialized garden of its kind in Shanghai. Every year around mid-April is the most beautiful season for the azaleas.

The park also features an orchard area with over 2,000 orange trees, as well as fruit trees such as hawthorn, jujube, persimmon, and bayberry. In the golden autumn season, they will be laden with fruit. At that time, visitors can come to pick the fruit, with charges based on weight. Additionally, the park has a teahouse and a riverside coffee bar where visitors can rest, enjoy tea, and take in the river views. The currently open area of 120 hectares is only Phase I of the park, with the remaining 180 hectares of Phase II actively under planning.

Transportation

Bus routes: 1. Take bus 81, 508, 602, 640, 793, 815, 936, 962, 968, or 971 to Gaoqiao, then transfer to the Riverside Forest Park shuttle bus at Gangcheng Road for a direct ride. 2. Take bus 611, 968, or GaoSan Line to Cangfangbang Road, then transfer to the Riverside Forest Park shuttle bus for a direct ride. 3. The Riverside Forest Park shuttle bus runs approximately every 15 minutes. The morning bus to the park departs around 7:40 AM, and the evening bus departs at 3:50 PM. The last bus leaving the park departs at 4:45 PM. Additional buses may be added if there is a large number of visitors.

Self-driving route: Outer Ring Road — pass through the Outer Ring Tunnel — exit at Jiangdong Road; Middle Ring Road — pass through Xiangyin Road Tunnel — go along Pudong North Road to Jiangdong Road. As tourist attraction signs have not yet been fully set up, follow the signs for “Public Security College” to reach the park. There are no signs on the return route.

Gaoqiao Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Pudong New Area, Shanghai. During the Song Dynasty, it belonged to Linjiang Township of Kunshan County; in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, it was part of Yiren Township of Jiading County; in the Qing Dynasty and during the Republic of China, it belonged to Baoshan County; before 1949, it was part of Gaoqiao District in Shanghai.
