Shanghai Century Park

Shanghai Century Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Located in the Huamu Administrative and Cultural Center of Pudong New Area, Shanghai, it is the largest ecologically featured urban park with natural characteristics within the inner ring road area of Shanghai. The park is like a green emerald embedded at the end of the magnificent Century Avenue, fully embodying the noble theme of "humanity, nature, and harmony."

Century Park

The park covers an area of 140.3 hectares, and is 28 kilometers from Pudong International Airport and 24 kilometers from Hongqiao Airport. With large expanses of lawns, forests, and lakes as its main features, it embodies the fusion of Eastern and Western garden art and the harmony between humans and nature, forming a new type of leisure and entertainment park that is both modern and naturally wild.

The park is dominated by large areas of lawns, forests, and lakes, reflecting the integration of Eastern and Western garden art and the harmony between humans and nature. It features seven scenic areas: the Native Farming Area, Sightseeing Area, Lakeside Area, Sparse Forest Lawn Area, Bird Sanctuary, International Flower Garden, and Mini Golf Course, as well as activity spaces such as an open-air music theater, meeting plaza, children's playground, and fishing spots. It also includes landscape elements like high-column fountains, musical dry fountains, Four Seasons Garden, Century Flower Clock, large-scale reliefs, forest streams, pebble beaches, ginkgo avenues, and Yuanchi Pool. The park is crisscrossed with paths, dotted with rolling hills, shaded by evergreen trees, and dotted with clear lakes. Meandering streams flow through the woods, creating a serene atmosphere that makes it an ideal destination for leisure vacations and business exchanges, earning it the reputation of the "Park of Holidays."

The overall planning scheme of the park was designed by a British company. Covering a total area of 140.3 hectares, the park has a total investment of 1 billion RMB. Dominated by large areas of lawns, forests, and lakes, it features seven scenic areas including the Native Farming Area, Lakeside Area, and Sparse Forest Lawn Area, as well as 45 scenic spots such as the Century Flower Clock, Mirror Lake, and High-Column Fountain.

The park also offers 13 participatory amusement projects including a children's playground, leisure bicycles, sightseeing vehicles, boats, a green maze, fishing area, and pigeon recreation area. It also houses facilities such as exhibition halls, the Montreal Café, Jiazhuangyuan Restaurant, Century Restaurant, the Broad-Minded Cultural Home, and leisure concession stands.

Century Flower Clock: This is the iconic attraction of Century Park, located against Mirror Lake and facing Century Avenue. The circular flower bed has a diameter of 12 meters, with green boxleaf honeysuckle used as the scale and flowers as decoration, making the entire flower clock vibrant and colorful. The Century Flower Clock is timed by satellite instruments with an error of only 0.03 seconds, possessing scientific, artistic, and practical value. The park officially opened to the public on April 18, 2000. To commemorate this cross-century milestone and given the clock’s location at the end of Century Avenue, it is named the Century Flower Clock.

Mirror Lake: Upon entering Gate 1 of Century Park, you are greeted by Mirror Lake, which spans 12.5 hectares. It was excavated artificially, with a maximum depth of 5 meters, and is currently the largest artificial lake in the Shanghai area. Mirror Lake is connected to Zhangjiabang outside the park, and a sluice gate is built on the eastern side of the lake to control its water level. When a breeze passes, the lake sparkles and ripples; on clear, crisp days, the water is as mirror-like as the sky, with clouds reflected vividly on the surface—hence the name Mirror Lake.

Open-Air Music Plaza: The hillside-built open-air theater is located on the western side of Century Park, covering an area of 8,000 square meters. The front seating area can accommodate 2,500 people, and under full open conditions, it can host up to 4,000 visitors. In front of the audience area, there is a stage, a sound dome, lighting and sound control rooms, and auxiliary spaces. It is currently the largest man-made open-air theater in China. The white steel membrane sound dome is used to enhance acoustics, focusing the performers’ voices towards the audience, resulting in exceptionally clear and loud sound. The plaza faces clear water and is backed by wooded hills, offering visitors great enjoyment whether they are enjoying performances or singing for fun.
