Shanghai China Maritime Museum

The Shanghai China Maritime Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a science education base, and a patriotic education base.

The China Maritime Museum (ChinaMaritimeMuseum), officially known as the "Shanghai China Maritime Museum," is China's first national-level maritime museum approved by the State Council. It was jointly established in Shanghai by the Ministry of Transport and the Shanghai Municipal Government. The museum is located in Nanhui New Town, Pudong New Area, covering a land area of 24,830 square meters, with a total building area of 46,434 square meters. Construction began on January 20, 2006, and the museum was fully opened to the public on July 5, 2010. With a building area of 46,434 square meters and indoor exhibition space of 21,000 square meters, the museum centers on the theme of "navigation" and is grounded in "museum studies." It features six major exhibition halls: Maritime History, Ships, Navigation and Ports, Maritime Affairs and Safety at Sea, Seafarers, and Military Navigation. There are also two special exhibition areas: Fishing Boats and Fishing, and Nautical Sports and Leisure. Additionally, the museum includes an Planetarium, a 4D cinema, and a Children’s Activity Center, encompassing functions such as cultural relic collection, academic research, social education, and exhibition display.

Maritime History Hall

The Maritime History Hall is a key exhibition hall of the China Maritime Museum.

This hall is divided into three sections—Ancient, Modern, and Contemporary—based on a chronological timeline. It presents the development of buoyancy-based water crossing, canoes, wooden boats, sails, oars, rudders, and the compass alongside the timeline, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the invention and evolution of Chinese maritime technology.

Ship Hall

The Ship Hall is divided into two parts: Ship Structure and Equipment, and Shipbuilding.

By decomposing, introducing, and displaying ship structures, equipment, and construction, the hall presents visitors with a clear and transparent blueprint of a ship. It also combines interactivity, environmental simulation, visitor participation, and real cultural relics and objects. When showcasing ship structures, a large 1:6 scale, highly realistic cross-section model of a 10,000-ton cargo ship was created, with a length of about 25 meters and a height that spans two levels of the exhibition space.

Maritime and Port Hall

The Maritime and Port Hall mainly showcases the marine environment,

as well as technical materials including instruments and equipment used to ensure the navigation of ships from ancient times to the present, such as celestial navigation, terrestrial navigation, and radio navigation. It also displays a large number of cultural relics and objects reflecting ports and waterways.

Maritime Affairs and Maritime Safety Hall

The Maritime Affairs and Maritime Safety Hall consists of two independent exhibition areas: Maritime Affairs and Maritime Safety.

The Maritime Affairs Hall uses physical objects and supplementary graphics to showcase the history of maritime affairs and maritime regulation and law enforcement. The Maritime Safety Hall uses physical objects, models, multimedia, and electronic maps to present topics such as maritime rescue, marine salvage, and piracy prevention.

Seafarers Hall

The Seafarers Hall mainly displays physical objects and documents closely related to the work and life of seafarers. At the center of the exhibition hall is a maritime simulator modeled after the bridge of a large container ship, vividly demonstrating the characteristics of operating a modern vessel and allowing visitors to experience what it's like to be a captain by actively controlling the ship.

Military Navigation Hall

The Military Navigation Hall is divided into two main display areas: the construction of the Chinese People’s Navy and knowledge about warships.

It highlights various types of warship models, naval flags, and naval uniforms, and features a highly realistic replica of a submarine command center. Warship-mounted artillery and other physical objects are displayed outdoors.
