Gaoqiao Park

Gaoqiao Park is located in Gaoqiao Town, Pudong New District, Shanghai. It borders Nanqun River to the south, Dazhai River to the west, Huashan Road to the north, and Tongyuan Road to the east. Covering an area of 69.6 mu, it includes a water surface of 4.5 mu and lawn areas of 2

mu. The park has planted over 50,000 plants of nearly 100 varieties across more than 40 species, achieving a green coverage rate of 66%. In May 1988, with the support of the Shanghai Municipal Gardening Bureau, construction of Gaoqiao Park officially began. The park was opened for trial on June

1, 1990. It is a second-tier park primarily funded by the government, supplemented by contributions from various sectors of society.

After its completion, the daily management of plants and park facilities at Gaoqiao Park was handled by relevant departments. Through years of careful maintenance, the park developed a lush green atmosphere with blooming flowers, green willows, and clear waters. It has been honored with titles such as Advanced Greening Unit and Double-Excellence Park.

The main attractions of Gaoqiao Park include the South Gate, Lakeside Pavilion Area, Rockery and Stone Scenic Spot, Corridor, and Bilian Lake. The South Gate is situated at the southeast corner of the park and consists of a ticket office, management rooms, gate pillars, the main gate, and enclosing walls. The gate is faced with red granite, and above it are the spread wings of a seagull. The gate pillars are inlaid with three pieces of white marble forming the shape of a “river.” The walls feature large wave-like blades, and the roof tiles are wavy—symbolizing Gaoqiao by the East China Sea, vibrant and thriving. The Lakeside Pavilion Area is located on the east side of Shidao Path, north of the South Gate, and includes a central lake pavilion, zigzag bridge, and Lotus Villa. The lake is home to thousands of red carp, and the surrounding area is planted with dozens of peach and willow trees. In spring, the peach blossoms and green willows complement the swimming carp, creating a delightful scene. The Rockery and Stone Scenic Spot is located in the southern part of the park, standing 6–7 meters high. Originally a combined bunker from the Liberation War period, it is now covered with yellow stones. The rockery features a round pavilion, round table, and round stools for visitors to rest. From the top, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the park’s beautiful scenery. The Corridor is located in the western part of the park, bordering Dazhai River to the west and a bamboo forest hill to the north. Each end of the corridor has a Western-style pavilion, and the middle section is adorned with latticed windows. With its white walls and black tiles, resting here while listening to the rustle of bamboo brings peace to the mind.

Gaoqiao Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Pudong New District, Shanghai. During the Song Dynasty, it belonged to Linjiang Township of Kunshan County; during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, it was part of Yiren Township of Jiading County; in the Qing Dynasty and the Republican era, it was governed by Baoshan County; before 1949, it was part of Gaoqiao District, Shanghai. In 1956, it was placed under Dongjiao District, then in 1958 under Pudong County, transferred to Chuansha County in 1961, and became part of Pudong New District in 1993. The ancient town of Gaoqiao got its name in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties from a local bridge called “Gaoqiao.” Located in the northern part of the district, it is shaped like a “convex” character, nestled between Waigaoqiao and Donggou Town, with seven detached land parcels.
