opened on April 9, 2000, with Jiang Jianqing, President of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and Gong Xueping, Deputy Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee, unveiling the banking museum.

The Shanghai Banking Museum is the first financial industry museum in Shanghai and even the whole country. With its concise and detailed historical materials and artifacts, as well as vivid and striking presentation methods, it focuses on the development history of modern banks in Shanghai, condensing 150 years of banking evolution in the city. The exhibition hall of the Shanghai Banking Museum covers an area of 1,500 square meters.

The museum includes a history hall, a coin hall, and an exhibition hall, housing a collection of over 20,000 banking-related items, with more than 2,000 items on display. Among them, historically valuable items include bankbook ledgers, bills of exchange from old-style banks, seals, checks, stocks, badges, utensils, touchstones, gold balances, and other tools used by early banks, as well as precious artifacts such as the “Ying Yuan” from the Chu State during the Warring States period over 2,000 years ago, “gold cakes” from the Western Han Dynasty, “gold ingot knife coins” from the Wang Mang period, the Zhizheng treasure note, revolutionary base currency, and the first set of Renminbi issued by the People’s Bank of China.
