The former residence of Zhang Wentian is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a patriotic education base.

The former residence of Zhang Wentian is located at the intersection of Chuan Nan Feng Highway and Wen Ju Road, west of Shanghai Pudong International Airport. On August 30, 1900, Comrade Zhang Wentian, an outstanding proletarian revolutionary and theorist, a loyal Marxist, and an important leader of the Communist Party of China for a considerable period, was born here and spent his youth. On June 25, 2001, the residence was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the State Council, and in January 2003, it was named a Shanghai Patriotic Education Base by the Shanghai Municipal Government.

In August 2008, the Zhang Wentian Memorial Exhibition Hall was built to the west of the former residence, covering an area of 3,500 square meters with a construction area of 1,500 square meters, of which 980 square meters are used for displaying the life and deeds of Comrade Zhang Wentian. The exhibition is divided into ten sections: “Birth & Schooling,” “Engagement in the New Culture Movement,” “Embarking on the Revolutionary Path,” “In the Role of General Secretary,” “After the Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee,” “Pioneering in the Northeast,” “Years in Foreign Affairs,” “Quest in Adversity,” “Sublimation in Turbulent Times,” and “Remembrance & Legacy.” With over 300 photos, it vividly portrays the eventful and magnificent life of the veteran revolutionary Zhang Wentian. He was a key leader who made special historical contributions to the successful convening of the Zunyi Conference and the peaceful resolution of the Xi’an Incident; he was the designer who laid the foundation for the economic development policy of New China; he was the theorist who profoundly summarized the lessons of the 1958 mistakes at the Lushan Conference; he was the ideological pioneer in exploring the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics... Since its opening, the former residence has welcomed numerous visitors every year, with batches of party, league, and Young Pioneer organizations holding oath-taking ceremonies there.

Proletarian Revolutionary Zhang Wentian

Zhang Wentian, who once attended Liuli Pudong Middle School, was born in 1900 into a farming family in Pudong. During his school years, he began to be exposed to Marxism-Leninism and became an enthusiastic fighter in the New Culture Movement during the May Fourth period. In 1924, after returning from the United States, he joined the Communist Party of China during the May Thirtieth Movement and embarked on the path of a professional revolutionary. In 1931, he served as Minister of the Central Propaganda Department and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau, joining the core leadership of the Party Central Committee.
