Attraction Introduction

The China Art Museum was once the China Pavilion during the Shanghai World Expo. If you missed seeing it up close during the Expo, now is your chance to explore this magnificent structure at your own pace. In addition to viewing the prized multimedia version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival, the museum also houses numerous artworks by modern artists.

To visit the China Art Museum, simply pick up a free ticket at the ticket office and pass through security. The main exhibition halls are located on the 0m, 5m, 33m, 41m, and 49m levels. You can take elevators between floors. It’s recommended to first take the direct elevator to the 49m level, then explore the exhibits from top to bottom using escalators.

The multimedia version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival is displayed on the 49m level. Since the Expo, this attraction has been permanently housed here and remains one of the museum’s most popular highlights—but a separate ticket is required for entry. This floor also features the “Bright Moon Rising Over the Sea—The Origins of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art” exhibition, showcasing paintings by the “Shanghai School” that blend Eastern and Western styles. This is also a permanent exhibit. From the heights of this level, you can also enjoy views of nearby landmarks such as the Mercedes-Benz Arena, once iconic Expo venues.

The other floors mainly display a variety of artworks by renowned modern Chinese artists, as well as temporary exhibitions of domestic and international art. The content of these temporary exhibitions changes frequently, offering opportunities to view artworks from museums around the world. There are also many long-term exhibitions, including major ones on the 0m level such as the “China Art Museum Shadow Puppet Art Exhibition,” “Wu Language · Dialect – Shanghai Artists Invitation Exhibition,” and “He Youzhi Tells Stories – Donated Works Exhibition.”

Special Tips

1. It is recommended to avoid visiting during holidays, as it may involve longer queues and affect the overall visiting experience.

2. Cameras, drinking water, and bags are allowed inside the museum, but photography and drinking are not permitted in the exhibition halls (though they are allowed in the lobby).
