Jinshan is Shanghai’s first national-level marine park to be proposed, covering a total area of 39 square kilometers. It includes 3 square kilometers of land reclamation projects and the conversion of 7.3 kilometers of chemical production shoreline. The park focuses primarily on the protection and restoration of the marine ecological environment, along with cultural landscapes, scientific research, education, and leisure tourism.

National marine parks are an extremely important form of marine ecological conservation. They are designated areas aimed at protecting marine ecosystems and natural-cultural landscapes, while also promoting ecotourism. These parks are established around unique marine ecological landscapes, historical and cultural heritage sites, distinctive geological and geomorphological features, and their surrounding sea areas. They represent one type of China’s special marine protected areas. Unlike commercial theme parks such as Hong Kong Ocean Park and the Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean Park currently under construction in Pudong, which focus mainly on tourism development.
