The Mercedes-Benz Arena features a futuristic flying saucer-like design that takes on different forms from various angles and spaces. By day, it resembles a “time-space shuttle” or a “seashell in an ocean of art”; by night, it becomes dreamy and surreal, like a “floating city.” The building is centrally positioned with the Lupu Bridge to its northwest serving as a backdrop. Its soft, flowing form blends harmoniously with the green spaces of the riverside park; it integrates organically with the Expo Celebration Plaza, merging in form; it interacts, transitions, and connects both indoors and outdoors with the 10,000-capacity Celebration Plaza; and it corresponds and harmonizes with the Expo Axis and Expo Center to the west, as well as the China Pavilion to the south. It houses a main venue with 18,000 seats, as well as a music club, cinema, ice rink, restaurants, and retail areas. As one of the most important permanent venues of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the Mercedes-Benz Arena hosted a variety of large-scale performances and events during the Expo, meeting the demand for major cultural shows. At the same time, it fully considered post-Expo sustainability and future use, aligning with Shanghai’s vision as an “international cultural metropolis.” The performance center is set to become a world-class modern entertainment venue; a cultural hub integrating comprehensive performances, artistic exhibitions, and fashionable entertainment; and a new landmark for Shanghai’s cultural scene and a fresh highlight for urban tourism.
