Union Building (formerly known as the Union Bank Building)

The Union Bank Building (Union Building), originally known in Chinese as “You Ning Building,” has addresses on both Zhongshan East 1st Road and Guangdong Road, with three numbers: its Bund address is No. 3, Zhongshan East 1st Road; its stone plaque lists it as No. 4, Zhongshan East 1st Road; and its Guangdong Road address is No. 17, Guangdong Road, with a plaque identifying it as THREE ON THE BUND. The main entrance is on Guangdong Road.

The Union Building, located at No. 4, Zhongshan 1st Road, is now owned by Singapore’s Giti Private Investment. Originally named the Union Building, it was owned by the American Union Bank, hence the name Union Bank Building. Completed in 1916, the seven-story building is designed in an overall Renaissance architectural style. Its window frames often feature Baroque-style patterns rich in swirling motifs, while the main entrance is adorned with Ionic columns. The tall floor-to-ceiling windows not only enhance natural lighting but also add to the building’s grandeur. The entire structure is axially symmetrical around the central doorway.
