Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in 1956 as one of the first institutions of higher education in traditional Chinese medicine founded after the founding of New China. It is the only university of traditional Chinese medicine jointly built by the Ministry of Education and a local government at the “ministry-city co-construction” level, and also a high-level university prioritized for development by Shanghai Municipality.

The university is situated in the scientific research and education area of Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Pudong New Area, covering an area of over 500 acres. It boasts comprehensive teaching facilities and a beautiful environment. As a university located in the core area of Zhangjiang Science City, it actively aligns with national strategies and contributes to the development of a globally influential science and technology innovation hub. Leveraging its existing academic disciplines and comprehensive strengths, the university takes on the responsibility of deepening the reform of higher education in traditional Chinese medicine, promoting independent innovation in the field, and leading the advancement of the traditional Chinese medicine industry.

The university has nearly 1,300 faculty and staff members, including three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and over 700 senior experts and professors. It has trained and delivered various levels of specialized professionals in traditional Chinese medicine for the country. There are nearly 8,000 full-time students on campus, and alumni are spread across more than 60 countries and regions. The university is recognized by the Ministry of Education as a “Talent Training Model Innovation Experimental Zone” and a “Specialized Program Development Institution.” It offers doctoral degree authorization points in three first-level disciplines—Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine—as well as one professional degree category (field) in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It also provides master's degree authorization points in three first-level disciplines—Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine—as well as four professional degree categories (fields): Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Nursing, and Translation. There are three postdoctoral research stations, and doctoral degree programs cover all disciplines of traditional Chinese medicine. The university offers 13 undergraduate and college-level majors, including not only undergraduate programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, and Integrated Chinese and Western Clinical Medicine, but also programs in Nursing, Food Hygiene and Nutrition, Rehabilitation Therapy, Pharmacy, Biomedical Engineering, and Preventive Medicine. There are eight continuing education undergraduate and college-level majors. The university has established research, teaching, and medical cooperation relationships with nearly 50 overseas universities, medical research institutions, and international organizations in 20 countries and regions. It has founded the first Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine in the United States and operates two Sino-foreign cooperative education programs registered with the Ministry of Education: the China-UK Pharmacy Program and the China-UK Nursing Program.

The university has four national key disciplines: Surgery in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Internal Medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Orthopedics and Traumatology in Traditional Chinese Medicine; two national key disciplines (cultivation): History and Literature of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Acupuncture and Moxibustion; 38 key disciplines under the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; and four peak and plateau disciplines of Shanghai Municipality. It houses one Engineering Research Center for Modern Preparation Technology of Chinese Materia Medica under the Ministry of Education, three key laboratories under the Ministry of Education, three key laboratories under Shanghai Municipality, eight key research laboratories under the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and two national clinical research bases for traditional Chinese medicine. In the 2012 first-level discipline evaluation conducted by the Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education, the discipline of Chinese Materia Medica ranked first nationally, Traditional Chinese Medicine ranked second, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine ranked third.
