Shanghai Maritime University

Higher maritime education in China originated in Shanghai. In 1909, the Navigation Department of the Shanghai Higher Industrial School (Nanyang Public School) under the late Qing Dynasty's Ministry of Posts and Communications pioneered higher maritime education in the country. In 1912, the Wusong Merchant Marine School was established, and in 1933, it was renamed the Wusong Merchant Marine College. In 1959, the Ministry of Transport established the Shanghai Maritime College in Shanghai. In 2004, it was renamed Shanghai Maritime University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. To better serve the development of Shanghai as an international shipping hub and the national maritime industry, according to the city’s higher education layout adjustment plan, the main campus of Shanghai Maritime University relocated to Lingang New City in 2008. The university celebrated its centennial in 2009 with a series of events.

Shanghai Maritime University is a multidisciplinary university characterized by programs in shipping, logistics, and marine studies, covering disciplines such as engineering, management, economics, law, literature, science, and art. In 2008, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Transport signed an agreement to jointly support the university.

The university has 2 postdoctoral research stations (Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering), 2 first-level doctoral degree programs (Transportation Engineering, Management Science and Engineering), 19 second-level doctoral degree programs, 13 first-level master's degree programs, 59 second-level master's degree programs, 6 professional master's degree programs, 10 engineering master's programs, and 47 undergraduate majors. It houses 11 provincial and ministerial-level key research bases. There is 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 1 Shanghai municipal peak discipline, 2 Shanghai municipal plateau disciplines, 9 municipal and ministerial-level key disciplines, and the engineering discipline is ranked within the top 1% of the ESI global rankings. There are 5 national-level featured majors, 1 national-level comprehensive reform pilot major, 6 Ministry of Education Excellent Engineers Education Training Program majors, and 17 Shanghai municipal undergraduate education highland programs. The university also has 2 national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national-level virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers, 5 national-level practical teaching demonstration centers, and 1 national-level model professional degree graduate joint training base. It includes a maritime training center, with a 10,000-ton container training vessel named Yu Feng and a 48,000-ton bulk carrier training vessel named Yu Ming.

It received excellent ratings in the 2004 Ministry of Education undergraduate teaching evaluation and the 2006 Ministry of Education English major teaching assessment. In 2016, the total annual scientific research funding reached 280 million yuan, with a number of national-level research projects and science and technology awards at the ministerial or municipal level and above.

The university operates under a two-tier management system between the university and its colleges. Currently, it has the Merchant Marine College, Transportation College, Economic Management College (which includes the Asia Cruise Academy), Logistics Engineering College (which includes the Sino-Dutch Mechatronics Engineering College), Law School, Information Engineering College, Foreign Languages College, Marine Science and Engineering College, College of Arts and Sciences (which includes the Marxism College), Xu Beihong College of Art, Logistics Science and Engineering Research Institute, and Shanghai Advanced Institute of International Shipping, among other secondary academic units. Among over 21,000 students, there are more than 17,000 undergraduates, over 3,500 graduate students of various types, and over 700 international students. Among the over 1,100 full-time faculty members, there are 156 professors, and approximately 62.4% of the faculty hold doctoral degrees. The university is dedicated to cultivating various specialized professionals needed for the national shipping industry and has sent a large number of graduates to port and shipping enterprises, institutions, and government departments across the country, earning the reputation as the "Cradle of Senior Shipping Professionals."

In 2013, the university established the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Supply Chain Research Institute and the Shanghai Advanced Institute of International Shipping. The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Supply Chain Research Institute integrates the development of the free trade zone with supply chain research to enhance the industrial chain level within the zone, promote the transformation of goods trade to service trade, and advance the transformation of government regulatory functions. The Shanghai Advanced Institute of International Shipping adopts internationally advanced business school operational models, shares resources with leading global educational institutions, and strives to build a leading domestic and internationally renowned brand in shipping finance education, establishing an influential base for producing high-end shipping talent.

Shanghai Maritime University currently has five campuses: Lingang Campus, Minsheng Road Campus, Dongming Road Campus, Gangwan Campus, and Haihua College Campus. Among them, the Lingang Campus is the main location of the university’s operations. It was largely completed in October 2008, covering a land area of over 1.33 million square meters with a total construction area of 600,000 square meters. The Minsheng Road Campus is where the Shanghai Maritime College was established in 1959. The Dongming Road Campus hosts the university’s MBA, EMBA, and Shanghai Advanced Institute of International Shipping programs. The Gangwan Campus is the main site for continuing education and secondary vocational education.
