Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone serves as a patriotic education base.

Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone is the first, largest, and earliest-established free trade zone in China, approved by the State Council in June 1990. It integrates multiple economic functions such as free trade, export processing, logistics and warehousing, and bonded goods exhibition and trade. The planned area of Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone is 10 square kilometers, and the currently developed and operational area covers 8.5 square kilometers. It is a specially managed economic zone with isolation facilities where goods can move freely between the zone and overseas without customs duties, import-related taxes, license inspections, or routine customs supervision procedures (excluding goods prohibited or specially regulated by the state). Drawing on the advanced development concepts of similar zones abroad and based on Shanghai’s economic and geographical conditions, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone has been carefully planned and developed into a comprehensive free trade zone integrating international trade, advanced manufacturing, modern logistics, and bonded goods exhibition and trade. It is also one of Shanghai’s key modern logistics industry bases, an important hub for import and export trade in Shanghai, and a significant component of Shanghai’s microelectronics industry belt.
