Landing Site of Japanese Troops in Jinshanwei

The Landing Site of Japanese Troops in Jinshanwei is a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a patriotic education base.

On August 13, 1937, Japanese forces initiated the Battle of Shanghai in Shanghai. On November 5, 1937 (the third day of the tenth lunar month), more than 100,000 invading Japanese troops landed in the coastal area of Jinshanwei. Facing an overwhelmingly superior enemy, the defending coastal forces fought to the death and valiantly resisted the invaders. Ultimately, due to being vastly outnumbered, only a little over 40 soldiers managed to break through, while the rest died as martyrs. After landing, the Japanese troops carried out wanton massacres against unarmed civilians in the city, implementing their “three alls” policy (kill all, loot all, burn all), and committed the horrifying “Third Day of the Tenth Lunar Month” Massacre.

In March 1984, the landing site of Japanese troops in Jinshanwei was designated by the Shanghai Municipal Government as a “Memorial Site of Japanese Imperialist Aggression in Shanghai.” In September 1985, the Jinshan County Government erected a pavilion and monument here. To better explore and integrate Jinshan’s historical and cultural resources and commemorate the great history of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Jinshan renovated and expanded the memorial site. It now mainly features anti-Japanese themed stone relief murals, a central sculpture, a memorial wall inscribed with the records of the “Third Day of the Tenth Lunar Month” Massacre, purple clay relief murals depicting anti-Japanese stories, a memorial wall for the victims, ruins of the ancient city wall, Japanese bunkers, a Bell of Warning Pavilion, and a monument marking the landing site of Japanese troops at the southern gate of Jinshanwei. A thematic exhibition room on the “Atrocities Committed by Japanese Invaders in Jinshan” has also been added to the city tower.
