Ancient Pine Garden

Ancient Pine Garden is located at No. 106 Fuxing East Road, Tinglin, Shanghai. Winding through a small courtyard imbued with the charm of a classical Jiangnan-style garden, visitors may enter through one of the two arched gates on either side. Inside, there is a small bridge, rockeries, a pavilion, and a brick-and-wood structure named “Pine Breeze Cottage” with upturned eaves and corners, as well as a winding corridor called “Curved Corridor.” Lush greenery abounds, creating a serene atmosphere. In the center of the courtyard, encircled by a circular stone railing, stands a 650-year-old Buddhist pine. This tree was planted by Yang Weizhen (1296–1370), a literary figure, calligrapher, and painter from the late Yuan Dynasty—renowned as a leader in poetry circles for his unique “Iron Cliff Style”—who also went by the courtesy name Lianfu and the art names Tieya and Dongweizi. Originally from Zhuji, Zhejiang, he later settled in Xupu (now Jinshan). He planted the pine tree to commemorate his 60th birthday in the 16th year of the Zhi Zheng era of the Yuan Dynasty (1356).
