International Chapel

The International Chapel is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a protected cultural heritage site in Shanghai.

The International Chapel is a well-known Christian church in Shanghai, located on the tranquil Hengshan Road. This Gothic Revival-style building, built in 1925, comprises the main chapel and a three-story annex. Although the chapel is generally not open to the public, visitors can go inside on Sundays to admire the historic structure and the verdant lawn. If you’re fortunate enough, you might even hear the angelic music performed by the choir, offering a serene moment to soak in the religious ambiance.

Originally named Union Church, it was later renamed “International Chapel” as worshippers from various denominations and foreign backgrounds began attending services here. The chapel features a red-brick structure with the altar positioned at the center of the main hall, flanked by two-story galleries. It can accommodate over 700 people. The chapel’s hymn-singing choir is highly acclaimed, and grand musical events are held during religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter, as well as on the third Sunday of each month.

The International Chapel also enjoys high international recognition. Dignitaries such as Dr. Robert Runcie, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, and renowned American evangelist Dr. Billy Graham have all been invited to preach here. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his family also attended services and visited the chapel. Additionally, the church holds English-language services and other religious ceremonies for the foreign community in Shanghai.
