Ba Jin’s Former Residence (Ba Jin’s Former Home) is a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Shanghai’s Ba Jin Former Residence is a notable historical building located at No. 113 Wukang Road in Shanghai. It was the home of Mr. Ba Jin in the city and is regarded as a literary shrine by millions of readers.

The famous writer Ba Jin lived on the third floor of this house from 1937 for 18 years, during which he completed the latter two volumes of his representative work, the *Torrents* trilogy — *Spring* and *Autumn* — as well as the classic novel *Cold Nights*. After the liberation, he also wrote the article *We Met with Commander Peng Dehuai* and compiled the short story collection *Tales of Heroes*, among others.

In this garden villa, the joys and sorrows of Ba Jin’s later life were interwoven. Here, he wrote *Random Thoughts*, widely recognized by intellectual, academic, and literary circles at home and abroad as “a great book of truth-telling,” as well as essays, novels, and translations such as *Reunion*, *Recollections of My Writing Career*, and *Past Events and Random Thoughts*.

Many Ba Jin researchers and devoted readers pay close attention to this “detached garden villa,” believing that everything here should be well preserved so that people will forever remember that a literary giant once lived here for a long time.

On April 4, 2014, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government reviewed and announced Ba Jin’s former residence as a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit (Hu Fu Fa [2014] No. 29).

Ba Jin (November 25, 1904 – October 17, 2005), originally named Li Yaotang, also used pen names such as Peigan, Jile, Heilang, and Chunfeng, with the courtesy name Feigan. He was of Han ethnicity, born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, with ancestral roots in Jiaxing, Zhejiang. He was a Chinese writer, translator, social activist, and non-partisan patriotic democrat.
