Kangjian Park

Kangjian Park stretches east to Liuzhou Road, south along Guanshengyuan Road, west near Guilin Road, and north against the Caohejing River, covering an area of 95,700 square meters. The park was originally a privately-owned amusement park-style farm called Kangjian Farm, established in 1937 and funded by Shanghai magician Bao Qinxuan (stage name Keyitianying). It opened to the public on April 1, 1953. In 1956, it became a public-private partnership and was briefly named “Kangjian Farm.” In 1958, it was officially named “Kangjian Park.” In September 1984, an agreement was reached between the Municipal Science and Technology Association and the Municipal Gardening Administration Bureau to transform the park into one primarily dedicated to promoting and popularizing scientific knowledge. A variety of entertaining amusement facilities were added. On May 4, 1985, it was renamed “Science Popularization Park,” but reverted to its original name “Kangjian Park” on January 1, 1990. The park has undergone two expansions, in 1987 and 2000, since its establishment.

The park features a Japanese-style architectural design and a garden-style landscaping layout, with ponds formed in low-lying areas, hills built along ridges, and pavilions and terraces scattered in a well-balanced arrangement. The scenery is pleasant, with landscapes that complement each other—boats gently gliding on the lake, lush green forests, clusters of stone bamboo shoots, magnificently blooming peonies, competitively radiant cherry blossoms, and elegantly floating hibiscus flowers. Visitors can row boats on the shimmering waters or take rides around the hills, while Japanese-style cottages dot the landscape, adding a refined touch. The main floral highlights include hibiscus, cherry blossoms, peonies, and osmanthus. Other blooming plants such as michelia, magnolia, and crape myrtle ensure continuous floral beauty throughout the seasons. The century-old peonies in the park thrive vibrantly.
