Huashan Children's Park

Huashan Children's Park is located at 1575 Huashan Road. Aside from the park entrance being on Huashan Road, the rest of the area is surrounded by residential buildings. The site was originally an undeveloped public plot that had turned into an informal garbage dump in the early years after liberation. In 1950, the Garden and Field Management Office of the Municipal Public Works Bureau converted the land into a park. Construction began on June 12 of that year, and the park opened to the public on May 1, 1952.

When the park was first built, there was only one thatched pavilion among the garden structures, and the total built-up area, including the management office and toilet, did not exceed 60 square meters. In 1972, the local Chenjiaxiang Residents' Committee set up a small library in the management office for primary and secondary school students to borrow books. In 1973, the gardening department allocated 7,000 yuan to add some children’s play facilities, improving the park’s appearance. In 1982, another 16,900 yuan was allocated to build a new hexagonal pavilion, a 29.4-square-meter management office, and to pave 280 square meters of colored flower brick flooring, with roads changed to cement surfaces. The renovation project was completed in the second quarter of 1983. The park sign was inscribed by Zhou Gucheng, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and the park reopened on International Children’s Day that same year. Children between 1 and 1.2 meters tall and adults accompanying children under 1 meter tall can enter for free.

The park has 1,900 square meters of green space, accounting for 70.37% of the total area. The plants planted create a fresh environment in the park, which is very popular with young visitors. In the central east of the park, there are three cedar trees about 10 meters tall, and in the northeast, there are seven camphor trees over 15 meters tall, some with a diameter at breast height of up to 150 centimeters. Around the park, there are 22 plane trees about 20 meters tall, with diameters of 1.5–1.6 meters. There are approximately 33 species of trees throughout the park, with a coverage rate of over 85%.

Children’s play areas are located on both the southern and northern edges. The southern area is about 140 square meters and includes swings with metal railings, a panda slide, and a seesaw. The northern area is about 90 square meters and features an elephant slide and a monkey climbing frame.

In 1999, the Changning Gardening Management Office, to which the park belongs, invested over 800,000 yuan to renovate Huashan Children’s Park once again. They built a new 100-square-meter management office, renovated the original hexagonal pavilion and colored flooring, installed an approximately 90-meter-long pebble fitness path around the central tree terrace in the park, accompanied by the same length of stainless steel railing, and completely updated all the children’s facilities. In terms of greening, while retaining the original large trees and well-growing flowering shrubs, they added a variety of blooming flowering shrubs, giving the park a completely renewed look that harmonizes with the surrounding environment and the newly renovated Huashan Road.
