Normandy Mansion

Normandy Mansion, originally named I.S.S Normandy Apartments and also known as Dongmeite Apartments, is located at 1842-1858 Middle Huaihai Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai. The building was constructed in 1924, funded by the International Savings Society, and designed by the famous architect László Hudec who lived in Shanghai. It is the first building in Shanghai featuring an outer corridor design. In 1994, Normandy Mansion was included in the second batch of Shanghai's Outstanding Historical Buildings. Many notable figures from the cultural and performing arts circles have resided here, including Zhao Dan, Wang Renmei, Qin Yi, Sun Daolin, and Zheng Junli.

Covering an area of 1,580 square meters, the total floor area of the building is 9,275 square meters. The structure is primarily reinforced concrete, with eight floors and a total height of over 30 meters. The exterior is designed in the style of French Renaissance architecture. Due to space limitations at the site, the ground floor adopts an arcade-style design, pulling the shopfront windows inward to leave space for the sidewalk. Additionally, the first and second floors feature cement imitation stone walls, giving them the appearance of a building base. From the third to the seventh floor, the facade is clad in yellow-brown bricks. The top eighth floor continues with the cement imitation stone finish, resulting in the building having three distinct visual sections. On the third and eighth floors, the designer incorporated continuous long balconies as belt courses to enhance the building’s layered effect. On the building’s northern side, to solve the issue of lighting in rooms, two large light wells were specially designed facing north.
