Shanghai Normal University is a key municipal university in Shanghai. It is a comprehensive university that emphasizes liberal arts, features teacher education, and maintains balanced development across disciplines including sciences, engineering, and the arts. The university has been included in the list of institutions jointly supported by the municipal and national governments under Shanghai’s comprehensive education reform initiative.

Founded in 1954, the university became an undergraduate institution in 1956. In 1981, it was among the first group of institutions approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to confer master's degrees, and in 1986, it was authorized to award doctoral degrees.

The university has over 21,000 full-time undergraduate students, more than 7,000 graduate students, a total of over 2,100 international students, and approximately 13,000 students enrolled in its evening college programs.

The university currently offers 86 undergraduate majors across 11 disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, agriculture, and art. The Chinese Language and Literature program houses a national base for talent cultivation and scientific research in fundamental liberal arts disciplines, approved by the Ministry of Education. The Classical Philology program is one of only four national bases for training professionals in classical literature. Four majors—Elementary Education, Chinese Language and Literature, Advertising, and Tourism Management—have been selected as part of the Ministry of Education’s Program for Characteristic Majors in Higher Education Institutions. The Early Childhood Education major is part of the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality’s pilot reform program for comprehensive reform of undergraduate majors. The Chinese Language and Literature (Teachers) and Elementary Education majors are included in the Ministry of Education’s Excellence Teachers Training Program. The Advertising major is the foundation program for Shanghai’s Excellence in Journalism and Communication Talent Cultivation Base, while the Tourism Management major is part of the Shanghai Municipal Pilot Project for Applied Undergraduate Programs. Eighteen majors have been successively selected for Shanghai’s Undergraduate Education Highland Construction Projects.
