Qian Xuesen Library

Qian Xuesen Library is a patriotic education base.

Located on the Xuhui Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Qian Xuesen Library was opened to the public on December 11, 2011, the 100th anniversary of Qian Xuesen's birth. The library covers a total site area of 9,300 square meters, with a total floor space of 8,188 square meters, consisting of one basement level and three above-ground floors, and features an exhibition area of over 3,000 square meters. The main exhibitions are divided into four sections: Founder of China’s Aerospace Industry, Pioneer at the Forefront of Science and Technology, Exemplary People’s Scientist, and the Path to Success of a Strategic Scientist.

On February 21, 2014, Qian Xuesen Library was awarded the title of Advanced Unit of Patriotic Education Bases in Shanghai for 2012–2013.

Founder of China’s Aerospace Industry, Pioneer at the Forefront of Science and Technology, Exemplary People’s Scientist, and the Path to Success of a Strategic Scientist. The library houses over 76,000 documents, manuscripts, and books by Comrade Qian Xuesen, more than 1,500 precious photographs, and over 700 physical objects. It also includes cultural facilities such as a resource hall, special exhibition halls, and academic exchange rooms.

Qian Xuesen Library is a National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base and will be developed into a center for the collection and management of Qian Xuesen’s literature and artifacts, a research center for his academic thoughts, and a promotion and exhibition center for his scientific achievements and noble spirit.

The overall architectural planning and design of Qian Xuesen Library were led by Professor He Jingtang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the designer of the China Pavilion at the World Expo.

The library is a square-ding-style building in a terracotta red color, with a relief sculpture of Qian Xuesen’s portrait on the exterior wall. Designers used advanced techniques to fully rely on varying textures and densities of the brick surface materials to create this relief, successfully using an "imagery" approach that aligns with the memorial theme.

The architectural form of the library adopts the design concept of “Earthly Sentiment, Earth-Shattering Surprise.” On one hand, the “square stone” symbolizes Mr. Qian’s deep love and devotion to the motherland; on the other hand, the architectural space scene where an Eastern Dongfeng-2A missile bursts forth from a “split stone” symbolizes Mr. Qian’s “earth-shattering” great undertaking of developing “Two Bombs, One Satellite.” The design presents a simple yet powerful image with a small base and larger upper body, representing a square building volume that stands upright—this is an abstract expression of the imagery of wind-eroded rocks in the Gobi Desert where Mr. Qian devoted his life.
