In 1932, Bishop Victor (a White Russian) of the Shanghai Diocese of the Eastern Orthodox Church raised funds from local Eastern Orthodox believers and the White Russian émigré community to build an Eastern Orthodox church at Rue Henri (now No. 55 Xinle Road), also known as the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. The roof features a semi-circular dome, a central large dome, and four smaller domes at the corners. It is the largest Eastern Orthodox church in Shanghai. In 1948, there were four Eastern Orthodox churches and missionary stations in the district: the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary on Xinle Road, the missionary station at the Russian restaurant at No. 6, Lane 113, Changshu Road, the missionary station at the Russian school at Hengshan Road and Wanping Road, and the Eastern Orthodox missionary station at No. 1233 Fuxing Middle Road.
