Shanghai Insect Museum, Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Shanghai Insect Museum of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is a patriotic education base.

The predecessor of the Shanghai Insect Museum was the insect department of the Musee Heude (Shanghai Aurora Museum), established in 1868 by French priest P. Heude. It was built in Xujiahui in 1883, and in 2002, the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences invested 10 million yuan to construct the new Shanghai Insect Museum.

After more than 100 years of development, the Shanghai Insect Museum has collected over one million insect specimens from across China, preserving a large number of rare and endangered insect specimens as well as specimens of hazardous quarantine pests from both domestic and international sources. It is one of China’s largest insect specimen museums, an important part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' biological specimen collection, and the only specialized insect specimen museum in East China, enjoying widespread influence and high recognition both nationally and internationally. In 2002, it was named one of the “100 National Youth Science Education Bases.”

In addition to insect exhibitions, the Shanghai Insect Museum also organizes insect science lectures and presentations tailored to the biology curricula of primary and secondary schools, as well as various theme activities related to insects, receiving widespread acclaim from all sectors of society.
