Xin Kang Garden

Xin Kang Garden is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

Lane 1273, Middle Huaihai Road (Xin Kang Garden), built in 1934. Designed by the British architectural firm Palmer & Turner. It is a Spanish-style garden building. The structure runs north-south between Middle Huaihai Road and Middle Fuxing Road. Originally built as dormitories for the British trading firm Xin Kang & Co., it consists of 11 two-story garden apartment houses and 4 five-story apartment buildings. The façade features a brown terracotta tile facing on the first floor, while the upper floors are finished with cement plaster and coated in light green paint. It has a flat roof, symmetrical layout, large windows, and utilizes then avant-garde corner windows, showcasing a simple modern Art Deco style.

Entering through the grand gate on the Middle Huaihai Road side, you’ll find a spacious lane lined with Spanish-style two-story garden apartments. Brown wooden doors open into quiet courtyards, shaded by tall cedar trees.

Recognized as part of the fifth batch of protected cultural heritage sites in Shanghai and among the first batch of outstanding historical buildings in the city.
