In the evening, the colorful landscape lighting on the classical-style buildings also makes this area a beautiful sight.

Located in the old town area of eastern Huangpu District in downtown Shanghai, the City God Temple Tourist Area is a large district that combines sightseeing, shopping, and dining. In addition to the two main paid attractions—Yu Garden and the Old City God Temple—there are also open-access smaller sites such as the Zigzag Bridge and the Mid-Lake Pavilion. Don’t miss the Nanxiang xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), and you can also sit in the Green Wave Pavilion Restaurant, enjoying Shanghainese cuisine while watching the lively crowds below.

The City God Temple Tourist Area is always bustling with people, as it is also a famous commercial district. It features several wholesale markets for small commodities and comprehensive shopping malls, as well as numerous gold and jewelry shops. There are also many time-honored restaurants here, and you can purchase a variety of Shanghai specialties.

1. Around the 15th day of the first lunar month each year, the City God Temple hosts a lively Lantern Festival.

2. Each small commodity mall contains hundreds of small shops, primarily for wholesale but usually open for retail as well—just be sure to bargain.

3. The City God Temple Tourist Area is very crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. Please watch your belongings and beware of pickpockets.
