Wuchang Phoenix Mountain National Forest Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national forest park.

In Wuchang County near Harbin, there is a mountain called Phoenix Mountain, located over 150 kilometers from downtown Wuchang. It has northern and southern peaks and is the second highest mountain in the province after Datudingzi Mountain. In the past, it was only accessible by a narrow-gauge railway, and a road connecting it to the outside world was not built until the end of 2000. With its high mountains and dense forests, the area is rarely visited by humans. Because of its stunning scenery, it has long been called by locals... a natural garden.

I have longed to visit Phoenix Mountain, not only because it is a natural garden, but also for its uniquely spectacular alpine wetlands, its waterfall with a drop of hundreds of meters, its two streams—one white and one black—its five-kilometer-long canyon, and the azaleas that cover the mountainsides in spring and the intoxicatingly colorful forests in autumn.

About the Alpine Garden: The Sky Garden is situated at an altitude of 1,690 meters (GPS data actually shows 1,633M, while local sources cite 1,690M), on Laoyeling, known as the highest mountain in Heilongjiang. Covering an area of 100,000 square meters, it is one of the sources of the upper reaches of the Lalin River. The unique climate and natural environment have created a diverse range of vegetation in the mountains—dwarf pine, unique alpine birch, and alpine azaleas.

About the Alpine Wetland: The mountaintop features a vast expanse of open wetland with peat-like soil that retains a high level of moisture. It is covered with grasses and shrubs over a person’s height. According to experts, alpine wetlands serve both ecological and tourism functions. Such wetlands are found only in a few areas deep within the Greater and Lesser Khingan Mountains in our province, and this is the first discovery in our city. This wetland, at an altitude of 1,633 meters and covering a total area of 500–600 hectares, includes alpine carpets and alpine rice fields, and is hailed as... the kidney of the great mountain.

About the Alpine Stone Sea: The mountain also features a magical sea of stones, formed by piles of massive rocks covering an area of several thousand square meters. These rocks consist of volcanic stones and the red alpine plant Rhodiola rosea, creating a striking contrast of black and red.

About the Grand Canyon: The Phoenix Mountain Grand Canyon is located south of Dongsheng Forest Farm, at 128°12′ east longitude and 44°27′ north latitude. The northern peak of Phoenix Mountain is 1,668.9 meters high, and the southern peak is 1,633 meters high. The canyon extends 5 kilometers in depth, with the narrowest point being less than 20 meters wide. Towering green mountains shine brightly on both sides, and the murmuring springs create a sound as pleasant as music, making a walk through the canyon feel like stepping into a fairyland.

About the Grand Waterfall: According to surveys by relevant departments, waterfalls with a drop of over a thousand meters are rare in China. The source of the Phoenix Mountain Grand Canyon is referred to by local forestry workers as the “River to Heaven.” There are dozens of waterfalls, ranging from 10 to 50 meters in drop, connected in sequence, with a total drop of over a thousand feet, making it the premier waterfall in Heilongjiang.

About the Springs: Though the mountain is majestic, the presence of water adds a touch of magic. Phoenix Mountain is made even more unique by its one black and one white stream. The path to the mountaintop is always accompanied by springs—the water is so white it dazzles, so clear it resembles white silk. The path to the canyon also has springs by your side, but this water is dark and mysterious, like a black satin ribbon. (The water appears black simply because the stones at the bottom are black, reflecting their color onto the water.)
