Wuchang Mapan Mountain Rafting is located in Shahaizi Town, about 211 kilometers from Harbin. The area features the famous Greater and Lesser Mapan Mountains, Shipeng Mountain, and Da Tudingzi Mountain, the highest peak in the province. Wuchang lies in the warm zone of the southernmost part of Heilongjiang Province, at 126°44′ east longitude and 45°33′ north latitude. Surrounded by mountains, the Mapan Mountain area includes a scenic valley formed with the Shipeng Mountain range, through which the clear Lalin River flows. The water quality of Mapan Mountain has been tested and is comparable to the renowned Laoshan Mineral Water. As a result, the national government approved the construction of the Mapan Mountain Reservoir here, a drinking water project for Harbin.

Amidst these lush green mountains and clear waters, there are also many spectacular sights, beautiful legends, and rich historical culture. The Lalin River, which flows between the two mountain ranges, was originally called the Laling River. According to elders, when Wanyan Aguda, the founding emperor of the Jin Dynasty, died on the battlefield, his coffin was transported back to the former Jin capital via this river from the Central Plains, hence the name Laling River. During the Japanese invasion of Northeast China, the river was renamed Lalin River as it was used to transport high-quality timber looted from the region. Mapan Mountain boasts abundant natural resources. The area’s landscapes are uniquely beautiful and rich in produce. The headwaters of Mapan Mountain are home to a rare cold-water fish species unique to the region—shiyuliuyu (stone fish). The fish has tender and delicious meat. Wuchang rice, irrigated with this “mineral water,” has been recognized by the American Green Food Association as a nutritious rice variety. Eating this rice—the only one in China to receive such an honor—while sampling the mountain delicacies of Mapan Mountain and the unpolluted aquatic products of the Lalin River offers a delightful experience that is hard to find elsewhere.
