Huinan Yuanjue Temple

Huinan Yuanjue Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Originally named Sansheng Temple, Yuanjue Temple was built during the Republican era and endured through wartime turmoil. Its heyday was around 1935, when it functioned as a monastery for bhikkhus. At its peak, historical records describe bustling temple fairs teeming with visitors, flourishing incense offerings, over 20 ordained monks, and numerous devotees transporting offerings in carts. During the War of Resistance against Japan, the temple suffered damage from warfare, with severe destruction to its buildings. Frequent battles between the resistance forces and Japanese troops led to a gradual decline in the number of monks. After liberation, it took over 40 years for religious policies under the Party and government to be implemented. In April 1993, Master Renzheng, an elderly nun, came to Huinan County with her disciples to apply for the restoration of Sansheng Temple. With support from certain government departments, approval was granted in 1994 for the establishment of Sansheng Temple. The initial construction phase was extremely challenging, involving many twists and turns, and the temple was eventually located on the western hill of Xiangyangshan Reservoir. Due to the elderly nun’s failing health, she left Huinan in 1995 and was succeeded by her disciples until 1997. In September of that year, the Heilongjiang Provincial Religious Affairs Bureau and the Provincial Buddhist Association appointed Venerable Master Xianpu and nine nuns to take over the management and development of Yuanjue Temple. Located by Xiangyang Lake in Huinan County, Heilongjiang Province, Yuanjue Temple has, over the 12 years since its founding, successively constructed the Mahavira Hall, a stupa, the Heavenly King Hall, the Mountain Gate, monastic quarters, the Five Contemplations Dining Hall, the Eight Auspiciousness Pagoda, and the Nourishing Heart Pavilion.

Introduction to Venerable Master Xianpu, Abbot of Yuanjue Temple: Born in 1967 at the foot of Wofoshan Mountain in Mingsheng Village, Xigemu Township, Jiamusi City, she became a nun in 1988 at Ciyun Temple in Caijiagou Town, Fuyu County, Jilin Province. In 1989, she received full ordination at the White Horse Temple in Luoyang, Henan. In 1997, at the invitation of local lay Buddhists in Huinan County, Heilongjiang, and by appointment of the Heilongjiang Provincial Religious Affairs Bureau and the Provincial Buddhist Association, she formally took charge of Yuanjue Temple. Since 1999, she has served as a member of the Huinan County CPPCC. In 2002, she became an executive director of the Heilongjiang Provincial Buddhist Association, and in 2008, she was appointed vice president of the Jiamusi Municipal Buddhist Association. She completed a postgraduate program in religious studies at the Department of Philosophy, Peking University, in 2008.
