Dabai Mountain Scenic Area

The Dabai Mountain Scenic Area is situated at the southernmost edge of the reserve, standing at an altitude of 1,528 meters as the highest peak in the northern part of the sprawling Greater Khingan Mountains. In early summer, while the lower areas are already densely forested and green, the summit still retains a blanket of white snow. It’s reminiscent of Mount Fuji, creating an incredibly beautiful and immersive experience. Ascending Dabai Mountain offers panoramic views of the rugged mountain ranges and the boundless forests of the Greater Khingan, giving visitors a transcendent, almost ethereal feeling. Due to its high elevation, Dabai Mountain features a distinct vertical distribution of forest vegetation zones. The vegetation layers are distributed as follows: 1,500–1,200 meters: subalpine dwarf forest zone, including creeping pine thickets and alder-creeping pine thickets; 1,300–900 meters: montane cold-temperate subalpine coniferous (and broadleaf) forest zone, including creeping pine, Dahurian birch and larch forests, creeping pine-larch forests, and rocky slope vegetation; 1,200–700 meters: montane cold-temperate coniferous forest zone, including rhododendron-larch forests, ledum-larch forests, sphagnum rhododendron-larch forests, and sweet poplar forests; 700–660 meters: valley areas dominated by sedge marsh meadows. This vertical vegetation distribution is not only a vivid educational resource for botany but also holds high scientific research value. The mountaintop remains white year-round, resembling perpetual snow, much like Japan’s Mount Fuji. It sits serenely amidst the emerald mountains of the Greater Khingan. Viewed from above, it appears as a green-dotted highlight, like a white sail moored in an ocean of green. From a distance, it resembles the king of mountains—majestic, solitary, and stunningly beautiful, sparking awe and longing. Reaching the summit, you can gaze upon the surrounding peaks all at once. The creeping pines (China’s largest creeping pine garden), wild rhododendrons, and other vegetation sway in the wind, while woodpeckers, warblers, and larks fill the forest air with cheerful chirping. Relaxing atop this lofty and unique Dabai Mountain, listening to the beautiful melodies of nature, feels like stepping into a paradise on earth, bringing peace and joy to the soul. Major attractions include:

1. Guest-Greeting Pine: This is a thousand-year-old Korean pine growing at the highest point of the First Peak of the Greater Khingan. With its outstretched branches, it appears to be extending an elegant welcome, beckoning visitors. Evergreen all year round, it symbolizes eternal friendship.

2. Dabai Mountain is also home to a rare type of high-mountain snow tea, unique to China. It is extremely precious, with a market price of around 10,000 yuan per jin (500g) in the U.S., although few people know about it apart from professional harvesters.

3. First Tower of the Greater Khingan: Firewatch towers are unique to forested regions. To see far, you must climb high. The watchtower built atop the First Peak of the Greater Khingan is known as the First Tower of China’s Northern Frontier. Standing 28 meters tall, ascending it allows you to look out over the mountains, fulfilling the saying “When you reach the summit, all other peaks seem small.” The endless sea of forests stretches out below, fully visible in a single sweeping view.

4. China’s Largest Creeping Pine Garden: Creeping pine is a cold-temperate coniferous gymnosperm that grows at higher altitudes, surviving only between 1,300 and 900 meters above sea level. Dabai Mountain provides the most suitable environment for its growth, resulting in the largest concentrated area of creeping pines. As a result, the Huzhong District has earned the reputation as the “Hometown of Creeping Pines in China.”

5. Watching the Sunrise over the Greater Khingan: Rise early and climb Dabai Mountain to watch the sunrise. As the sun bursts forth from beyond the overlapping green peaks, the scene is truly spectacular.
