The First Bend of the Heilongjiang River

The Heilongjiang River, which originates from the confluence of the China–Russia border river Erguna River and the Shilka River flowing from Russia, located 15 kilometers northwest of Luoguhe Village in Mohe County, begins its journey here. From this starting point, the mighty Heilongjiang flows eastward along the valley between the Inner and Outer Khingan Mountains for 150 kilometers before suddenly forming a perfect Ω-shaped river bend at a place called Hongqi Ridge. This magical, 30-kilometer-long grand bend is known as the First Bend of the Heilongjiang River. The formation of the bend is naturally due to changes in terrain, but as China’s third-largest river, the Heilongjiang has an abundant water flow that cannot be easily redirected by ordinary landforms. As a result, the side blocking the river’s flow often features towering cliffs and steep precipices, while the other side is relatively low and gentle. On top of the cliffs on the Chinese side lies another spectacular scene: the mountaintops are flat and covered with dense forests. Standing at the hilltop near the first bend, a beautiful and magical panorama unfolds before your eyes: a stream of crystal-clear water rushes in from one side, gently curving northward at your feet, then veering right toward the horizon where it meets a cliff and disappears into the distance; on the opposite bank lies a beautiful island encircled by the river, covered with pristine mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests. The terrain slopes gradually from high to low, and the colorful forest seems to flow in from afar, striking awe into the heart. The river curves around the beautiful island, forming a semi-circular golden beach, and thus this stunning island has earned the resounding name — Golden Ring Island.
