Monument to the Liberation of Changchun

The Monument to the Liberation of Changchun is a cultural relic protection unit of Jilin Province and a patriotic education base.

The Monument to the Liberation of Changchun stands at the north entrance of Nanhu Park in Changchun City. It was built to commemorate the liberation of Changchun.

For the liberation of Changchun, thousands of cadres and soldiers gave their precious lives. To deeply mourn the revolutionary martyrs who bravely sacrificed themselves for the liberation of Changchun, the Changchun Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the People’s Government of Changchun decided to build the Monument to the Liberation of Changchun, and to pay high tribute to those who contributed to the liberation and construction of Changchun.

On October 18, 1988, on the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Changchun, the Monument to the Liberation of Changchun was officially completed. The center of the monument lies along the extended axis of Xinmin Street in Changchun. The front of the monument bears the inscription “Monument to the Liberation of Changchun” by Comrade Peng Zhen. On the back of the monument, an inscription by the Changchun Municipal Government reads: “We express deep mourning for the revolutionary martyrs who bravely sacrificed themselves for the liberation of Changchun, and pay high tribute to those who contributed to the liberation and construction of Changchun.”

On the central south side of the monument’s base, taking advantage of the terrain’s elevation change, a relief wall over 3 meters high and 22 meters wide has been installed, flanked by stairs 11 meters wide on either side. The entire structure consists of the main body of the monument, the base, the relief wall, and the stairs. The main body of the monument stands 30.39 meters tall and is built upon a 48×55-meter base. The base of the monument has two levels: the upper level is a square with sides 10.18 meters long, and the lower level is a square with sides 19.48 meters long, symbolizing the liberation of Changchun on October 18, 1948. The main body is designed in the shape of a gate, with a simple form that represents the significant regional historical event of Changchun’s liberation in 1948 and its entry into a new era. The entire design carefully considers architectural scale, color, material texture, and other aspects, achieving excellent visual and landscape effects. The entire structure is surfaced with granite slabs, featuring bright colors and a distinct sense of the era.
