The Site of the Changjiadian Ambush is a classic red tourism destination.

The Site of the Changjiadian Ambush is located at the foot of the slopes on both sides of Liudaogoukou in Fuxing Village, Yulin Town, Ji’an City. It lies 12 kilometers north of Yulin Town and 40 meters east of the Shuangcha Highway in Yulin Town. The small village of Changjiadian, with just over ten households, was once a large carriage inn situated at the foot of the southern slope of Laoling, where passing carts and travelers often stopped to rest. The inn faced east with a row of three wing rooms along the highway, and a horse stable on the west side. Originally home to ten households, the area is now mostly farmland, with only ruins remaining of what was once the Changjiadian Inn.

In April 1938, anti-Japanese guerrilla forces stationed in Wudao Valley (now part of Ji’an) learned that the puppet army regimental headquarters in the county town was scheduled to pass through Yulinshuzi (now Yulin Town) and head to the puppet Dong Camp at Shuangcha River on the northern slope of Laoling to relieve another unit. They decided to hold their position in the Liudaogou area and ambush the puppet regimental headquarters.

Liudaogou is not far from the southern slope of Laoling. A narrow transport road connecting the southern and northern parts of the mountain passes through this area and served as the only route for the puppet regimental headquarters to travel northward across the mountain. Surrounded by continuous high mountains, with Laoling to the north, once the enemy entered the encirclement set up by the guerrillas, they would be trapped like turtles in a jar.

On the night before the puppet regimental headquarters was to pass through, the guerrillas received intelligence that a company of puppet troops from the Dong Camp at Shuangcha River to the north would come to provide support along the way. Guerrilla fighters immediately prepared for battle. Yang Jingyu personally commanded over 700 soldiers, who were stationed in ambush along both sides of the highway from the mouth of Wudao Valley to the foot of Laoling Mountain, forming a pocket-like formation.

Around 9 a.m. the next day, as a company of puppet troops from the Dong Camp at Shuangcha River, traveling southward to rendezvous with the puppet regimental headquarters, reached the section of the highway near Liudaogou (close to Changjiadian), they spotted several carts parked at Changjiadian. They cursed and walked down from the highway on the eastern slope into the gully to enter the inn, intending to seize the carts and look for some “extra income.” The puppet troops set up a machine gun on the highway. As those who entered the inn to seize the carts encountered the guerrilla assault team lying in ambush inside the carriage inn, it became impossible for the guerrilla fighters to let these enemies pass and then ambush the regimental headquarters as originally planned. The guerrillas quickly launched their attack. Several puppet troops, as if waking from a dream, fled in panic, running uphill toward the highway. The guerrilla fighters chased after them. At that moment, guerrilla forces stationed on both surrounding high mountains charged down, catching the enemy completely off guard with nowhere to hide. After capturing all the enemy weapons, the guerrilla forces took the captured puppet troops to Dagaoliang on the southern side of Liudaogou. Yang Jingyu explained to them the principles of resisting Japan and saving the nation, advising them not to fight their own compatriots for the Japanese invaders. After having them remove their military uniforms, he provided them with travel expenses and released them to go home. Meanwhile, the puppet regimental headquarters, which had come from the county town via Yulinshuzi to relieve the other unit, had just reached the entrance of Erdaogou when they heard gunfire from the valley ahead. Realizing the situation was dire, they fired a few random shots and then fled back toward Yulin Town via the original route.
