The ruins of the temporary field hospital at Hongshilazi

The ruins of the temporary field hospital at Hongshilazi are a classic site of red tourism.

The ruins of the temporary field hospital at Hongshilazi are situated in the central area of the Dongcha center of the Laoling Anti-Japanese Base, in Hongshilazi Gully, Dongcha Village, Qinghe Town, Ji’an City. They lie 6.5 kilometers from Dongcha Village and about 200 meters inside the mouth of the gully, beneath a rocky outcrop. There is a hidden ravine here, commonly referred to as Hongshilazi Gully. Walking about 200 meters into the gully from its entrance, you’ll find a rocky outcrop beneath which the temporary field hospital of the Anti-Japanese United Army was set up on a relatively flat area. Nearby, there is a mountain stream that provided water for washing and drinking. Due to the long passage of time and lack of protection, the hillside where the site is located has become overgrown with shrubs and wild grass. Natural weathering and other factors have made the original site unrecognizable.

In June 1938, after the Anti-Japanese United Army eliminated a unit of the So Brigade—known as the “Flower of Manchukuo Bandit Suppression”—near Jiajiafang, six seriously wounded soldiers were left behind to recuperate here. To provide the wounded with a safe place for treatment, the United Army, with the help of local anti-Japanese civilians, chose this location to establish a temporary field hospital. In August of the same year, after the Battle of Changgang, another 33 wounded soldiers were admitted to the hospital. At the time, due to limited conditions, only tents could be erected. In earlier years, the remains of three rows of stone kang beds could still be seen, along with their holes and slabs. Relevant departments also discovered items such as tweezers, kettles, and teacups at the site. Now, the ruins are very difficult to locate. At the time, the anti-Japanese civilians of Dongcha took great risks to regularly deliver food, make tofu, and provide warm clothing for the wounded soldiers of the United Army. Three elderly women even cooked for the injured, helping them recover quickly and return to the front lines of the anti-Japanese struggle.

This site is an important revolutionary historical relic.
