Xiaohuanggou Battle Site

Xiaohuanggou Battle Site is a classic red tourism attraction.

Xiaohuanggou Battle Site, located in the mountainous valley area near the town center of Qinghe Town, Ji’an City, was the final battle of the first defense of Linjiang during the “Four Defenses of Linjiang” campaign in the Chinese Liberation War. The terrain here is relatively open and flat, with the Weisha River flowing through, and it is now largely farmland — an important grain production area for Qinghe Village in Qinghe Town.

At 3:00 p.m. on January 19, 1947, remnants of the 584th Regiment of the 195th Division of the Kuomintang army stationed in Tonghua secretly invaded via Huadianzi. By dusk, they had entered the Qinggouzi area, with its Second Battalion entering Xiaohuanggou (now Qinghe Town). The Third Column of the Northeast Democratic United Army (later renamed the People’s Liberation Army) noticed that the enemy forces had advanced deep alone, and immediately ordered the 7th Division to encircle and annihilate them. It also directed the 22nd Regiment of the 8th Division to intercept reinforcements on the eastern hill of Sandao Waizi to ensure the flanks and rear of the 7th Division remained secure. That dusk, the 7th Division launched an attack on the enemy at Xiaohuanggou using its 20th Regiment. Due to the extreme cold and ineffective coordination, the attack failed despite fighting through the night. After dawn on the 20th, the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 20th Regiment attacked again, but the Kuomintang troops continued to resist fiercely. The division headquarters urgently deployed the mountain artillery battalion into battle and ordered the 20th Regiment to launch an all-out assault. Under the fierce bombardment of our strong artillery fire, assault teams charged bravely. Around 16:00, the enemy began to waver and attempted to flee, only to be disrupted by our artillery. Our assault units pressed the advantage and, by the afternoon of that day, completely annihilated the 2nd Battalion of the 584th Regiment of the 195th Division between Xiaohuanggou Village and Qinggou Village. They killed over 120 enemies including the battalion commander, captured 450 including the deputy battalion commander, seized seven various types of artillery, 26 light and heavy machine guns, over 300 rifles, four vehicles, as well as ammunition and other supplies. This victory marked a great triumph in the First Defense of Linjiang campaign, dealt a blow to the enemy’s arrogance, boosted troop morale, consolidated the Changbai Mountain base area, and shifted the struggle in southern Manchuria from an enemy advance and our retreat to a back-and-forth “see-saw” situation.
