Jilin Baishan Zhuobaohe National Wetland Park
Jilin Baishan Zhuobaohe National Wetland Park is a national-level wetland park.
Jilin Baishan Zhuobaohe National Wetland Park is located in Hongtuya Town, southeast of Baishan City. Its geographical coordinates are 126°27′23″ to 126°31′03″ east longitude and 41°50′50″ to 41°52′36″ north latitude, covering a total area of 652.0 hectares, and is 16 km from Baishan City. It was promoted to a national-level wetland park in December 2014.
The wetland park is situated on the southwestern slope of the Changbai Mountains, near the northern bank of the Yalu River, and in the eastern section of the Laoling Mountain Range. Peat wetlands are widespread both inside and outside the park, featuring intact structures and significant thickness, with the deepest layers exceeding 10 meters. In some areas, living moss is even present — a phenomenon that is relatively rare in the mountainous regions of eastern Jilin Province, and especially uncommon in high-altitude zones so close to human settlements. The park boasts diverse habitats and rich biological resources, with forest, wetland, and aquatic ecosystems coexisting, thus harboring a wealth of rare wildlife. According to surveys, there are 229 species of vertebrates across 55 families, 25 orders, and 5 classes in the wetland park. These include 27 species from 6 fish families; 9 species from 4 amphibian and reptile families; 169 species from 35 bird families; and 24 species from 10 mammal (wildlife) families. Among these, there are 2 species under national first-class protection: the golden eagle and the white-tailed sea eagle. There are also 31 species under national second-class protection, including 2 mammal species (the sable and the otter), and 29 bird species such as the crested honey buzzard, black kite, northern goshawk, Eurasian sparrowhawk, Japanese sparrowhawk, common buzzard, rough-legged buzzard, greater spotted eagle, grey-faced buzzard eagle, hen harrier, northern harrier, pallid harrier, osprey, peregrine falcon, Eurasian hobby, merlin, red-footed falcon, common kestrel, booted eagle, collared goshawk, eastern imperial eagle, lesser spotted eagle, short-eared owl, long-eared owl, Ural owl, Siberian grouse, mandarin duck, and others. The park is also home to a wide variety of plant species and complex vegetation types. In addition to large areas of diverse wetland types, there are also forest types such as poplar-birch woods, broadleaf mixed forests, Mongolian oak forests, and some planted forests. Surveys show that the wetland park has 151 species of vascular plants, including 12 species from 9 fern families and 139 species from 47 seed plant families (gymnosperms and angiosperms). Among them, there is 1 species of national first-class protected wild plant (the Korean yew), and 5 species of national second-class protected wild plants: Korean pine, Manchurian ash, Amur cork tree, Mongolian oak, and the heartleaf holly fern.
Since the commencement of wetland park construction, the Baishan Municipal People’s Government has implemented a series of effective measures to strengthen the development, protection, and management of the wetland park. It is actively establishing a management body and improving rules and regulations, as well as setting up safeguard mechanisms for conservation, management, and rational utilization. Led by the government and with the coordinated participation of departments such as agriculture, water conservancy, and finance, a range of vegetation restoration measures have been carried out. These include reclaiming forest land for afforestation, converting farmland back to wetlands, intercropping forests with crops, and transitioning grain fields to specialty crops — all yielding certain results. Currently, projects such as wetland restoration and ornamental botanical garden construction are underway in the park's education and exhibition zone and rational use zone.
To enhance the construction and protection management of the wetland park, the Baishan Municipal People’s Government will follow the guiding principles and development goals outlined in the master plan. During the planning period, efforts will be made to develop the Jilin Baishan Zhuobaohe National Wetland Park into a model site with excellent ecological quality, effectively protected wetlands, and established habitat restoration and utilization practices. This will help protect the water environment safety of Baishan City’s important water sources, and ultimately establish a national wetland park that meets national standards.
