Changbai Waterfall

Changbai Waterfall is located on the northern side of Heaven Lake, at the end of the Chengcha River. The waterfall is surrounded by sixteen spectacular peaks, with a gap on the northern side known as the U-shaped Gate (historically called the Small Gate), through which water from Heaven Lake flows down. Due to the steep mountain slopes and rapid water flow, the sight resembles a towering celestial ladder, which people call the "Heavenly River" or also refer to as the "Chengcha River." The Chengcha River bursts forth from the mountain pass, cascading down in tiers to form a waterfall that stands 68 meters high. At the mouth of the waterfall lies a massive rock named "Cowherd’s Crossing," which divides the waterfall into two streams. Like two jade dragons, the water columns bravely plunge toward the protruding rocky shoal and rush into the deep valley, splashing waves several zhang high, resembling a heavenly maiden scattering blossoms. The misty spray envelops the area like fog, creating the illusion of "thousands of snowdrifts falling from the Milky Way, and myriad strands of smoke rising from the cascading waterfall." The turbulent waters then flow into the Erdao Bai River, the main source of the Songhua River. In the depths of winter, the Changbai Waterfall plunges from the cliff, with countless droplets instantly freezing into ice particles. These particles cluster together into icy blossoms, shooting out in all directions, sparkling like silver fireworks.

It spans the earth and reaches the heavens, with clouds churning and rain pouring, its roar audible dozens of miles away, like the charge of ten thousand horses—a truly spectacular sight. Visitors who pass by cannot help but stop and gaze upward, filled with awe and emotion. The waterfall resembles a white silk ribbon descending from the sky, thunderous and mighty, like a jade dragon diving into the valley, an awe-inspiring spectacle. Over hundreds of years, the force of the cascading water has carved out a pool about 20 meters deep beneath the waterfall. The water from the pool flows out to form the Erdao Bai River.

Everyone who has visited Changbai Mountain is captivated by the majestic and ceaselessly flowing Changbai Waterfall. The silvery flow seems to descend from the heavens, crashing to the ground with a thunderous roar. Changbai Waterfall is located on the northern side of Heaven Lake, at the end of the Chengcha River. After flowing 1,250 meters, the Chengcha River plunges down in a torrent, forming the 68-meter-high Changbai Waterfall. As one of the scenic highlights of Changbai Mountain, it is thus named the Changbai Waterfall.
