Heavenly Maiden’s Bathing Pool

Highlights The Heavenly Maiden’s Bathing Pool is a small volcanic crater lake. Its waters are shallow with abundant aquatic plants. In the center, there is no ice in winter or duckweed in summer. There are no inflowing streams or outflow outlets, yet springs gush upward like pillars. The area around the pool is covered with tall pine trees that block out the sunlight, while the shores are lush with fragrant grass. Swifts dart across the sky, fish swim beneath the surface, and white cranes play together—making it a true earthly paradise.  Introduction Located 30.4 kilometers to the northwest of Tianwen Peak lies a “round and turbid” pool shaped like a lotus leaf, known as the “Round Pool.” Legend has it that this was where three celestial maidens descended to bathe. Among them, the youngest sister, Fokulun, became pregnant after swallowing a fruit following her bath. She gave birth to a boy with an extraordinary appearance who could speak at birth. His name was Bukūri Yongšun, and the emperors of the Qing Dynasty are his descendants. In the 34th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty, Liu Jianfeng, a provisional magistrate from Fengtian, visited the site. To allow everyone to witness this place, he erected a stone tablet by the pool inscribed with “Heavenly Maiden’s Bathing Site,” hence the name “Heavenly Maiden’s Bathing Pool.”
