The Changbai Mountain Plateau Ice Field Training Base is situated within the primeval forests of the Jilin Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve. It boasts vast snowfields, pure water quality, and breathtakingly majestic scenery. It is one of China’s main bases for ice and snow athletes to conduct training, as well as a renowned winter and summer holiday resort that integrates original ice rinks with plateau ski slopes. Its ski runs wind through the boundless primeval forests of Changbai Mountain, flanked by towering pines and birch trees, with ancient, towering trees creating picturesque views. Visitors can grip ski poles, strap on snowboards, or ride snowmobiles as they speed across snowy terrain, immersing themselves in the wonders of this icy kingdom.

Nestled among the peaks of Changbai Mountain, the base sits at an altitude of 1,640 to 1,820 meters, with temperatures often ranging between -15°C and -25°C. Covering a total area of 120,000 square meters, it is one of the few comprehensive bases in China that integrates ice skating, skiing training, and sports tourism. The optimal period for ice and snow tourism and sports training is from October each year to early May of the following year.

The ice rink, treated with scientific technical methods, features pure ice quality and excellent glide, where many ice athletes have broken national and world records.

The base includes a natural alpine ski slope, internationally standardized cross-country skiing and biathlon ski competition venues, a plateau speed skating rink, a figure skating rink, and a comprehensive gymnasium. Among its over ten ice and snow sports training venues, the alpine ski slope located on the mountainside along the left side of the Tianchi Highway has a course length of 35 meters and an average slope of 20 degrees. A single-seat cable car provides convenient training conditions for athletes. The Xiaotianchi Ski Slope and Hot Spring Ski Slope are popular destinations for ice and snow tourists and beginner skiers. The cross-country skiing and biathlon venues feature meandering courses that wind through dense forests, with routes of 5 kilometers and 3 kilometers respectively. The elevation changes of the courses fully comply with competition regulations. The start and finish lines are set on the ice rink, offering wide visibility and clear courses. The shooting range and penalty loops are located on the inner arcs of two curves. The venue’s equipment and communication facilities meet modern standards and have received praise from experts in the ice and snow sports community as well as foreign coaches.

Over the past 36 years, the ski slope has hosted numerous domestic and international athletes for training and competitions. Internationally, ski teams from Russia’s Khabarovsk and Chelyabinsk, Nagano Prefecture in Japan, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have come here for training. Additionally, coaches and experts from Austria, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Canada, and other countries have visited the Changbai Mountain ski slopes to give lectures and assist with training.

Ski teams from various provinces across China and the People’s Liberation Army have conducted training and competitions here for many years and on multiple occasions. The cross-country skiing and biathlon skiing competitions of China’s 6th National Winter Games were also held here. This ski slope has also hosted numerous bilateral and multilateral international friendly skiing competitions. Over the past 36 years, nearly 5,000 person-times have undergone extended snow season training and competitions here. The base has evolved from a closed, training-only facility to one that engages with society and the market, developing sports tourism and services for tourism sightseeing as part of the tertiary industry.
