Changbai Mountain cold springs, crystal-clear, sweet, and fragrant, are as widespread throughout the mountainous region as its hot springs—like dazzling pearls scattered across the deep mountains. Among them, the Changbai Medicinal Spring is the most famous cold spring in the tourist area.

It is located on the west bank of the Toutiao Baihe River, 17 kilometers from the Erdaohe Railway Station. The Medicinal Spring has five outlets, with the water temperature consistently maintained at around 8°C. In the peak of summer, when you come here and take a few sips of the spring water, you’ll experience a numbing and spicy sensation, hence its reputation as “natural soda.” The Medicinal Spring contains elements such as strontium and lithium, and this type of mineral water is currently quite popular worldwide. Among them, the Changbai Mountain Hot Spring Sanatorium, located in Fusong County—the hometown of ginseng in the heart of Changbai Mountain—is equipped with advanced medical facilities. It serves as a rehabilitation and wellness resort in Northeast China that integrates specialized medical treatment, hot spring bathing, eco-tourism, and resource development.

The Changbai Mountain tourist area features numerous cold springs, medicinal springs, and mineral springs with temperatures below 25°C. Notable examples include: Golden Thread Spring, situated on the picturesque western shore of Tianchi Lake, at the eastern foot of Yuzhu Peak. The spring water flows out between two stone pillars from north to south, cascading like a thread and pouring into Tianchi. Golden Thread Spring is a must-pass spot when ascending Changbai Mountain via the western slope to reach Tianchi. The spring water trickles out, crystal clear, with white pumice stones embedded in the spring bed, looking pure and transparent. There is also a scenic spot by the lake called Foot-Washing Stone for visitors to enjoy.

Jade Nectar Spring is located on the eastern side of Yuzhu Peak, about 350 meters from Tianchi. The spring outlet is relatively large, approximately 50 meters in length from east to west and 40 meters in width from north to south. The spring water gushes out from cracks in the stone cave, flows for some distance as an underground stream, and then resurfaces about 20 meters from Tianchi before flowing into the lake. Its water quality is crystal clear and clean; drinking it is said to cleanse the intestines and stomach, refresh the mind, and leave a rich, mellow taste, like fine jade liquid. A poet once wrote: “If you visit Tianchi, be sure to fill your silver pot with jade nectar.”

The Changbai Medicinal Spring is located on the west bank of the Toutiao Baihe River. Its five outlets are lined up along the riverbank. The water temperature remains around 8°C year-round. The medicinal spring water is like natural soda, cooling and refreshing, and can be consumed directly by visitors. The main components of the spring water are free carbon dioxide, bicarbonate, magnesium, sodium, and calcium, which have therapeutic effects on conditions such as gastritis, indigestion, constipation, rheumatic myocarditis, and high blood pressure.
