Valley Forest, also known as Underground Forest, is located on the banks of the Erdao Baihe River, about 5 kilometers east of the Changbai Mountain alpine ice rink and north of the Dongtian Waterfall. The entrance to the Valley Forest scenic area is at the 18–19 kilometer mark along the road within the nature reserve. Following a slightly maintained path through the primeval forest, you’ll venture deep into the dense woods, tread on thick moss, climb over fallen trees blocking your way, pass through the Sword Gate, and then the entire valley-bottom forest comes into view.

Due to orogenic movements or volcanic activity, large areas of the stratum collapsed, forming a massive valley that caused entire forests to sink to the valley floor. Even nature’s modest display of power is truly breathtaking. The valley walls rise 50–60 meters high, and the valley floor stretches 2,500–3,000 meters in length. If you have the courage to descend to the valley bottom, you’ll experience the raw force of nature even more profoundly. Torrents roar and howl at the bottom, fallen trees lie scattered among jagged rocks, and the occasional eerie cry of strange birds echoes through the air... This is a scene from the depths of an ancient forest.

The Underground Forest, also called Valley Bottom Forest, is the lowest-altitude scenic area in Changbai Mountain, situated within a forested fault basin. It formed when parasitic craters accompanying the main volcanic cone of Changbai Mountain were later cut by fractures and sculpted by surface exogenic forces, leading to collapses that created this forest landscape. Towering ancient trees fill the valley bottom, arranged in three layers, with huge rocks scattered artfully. Standing deep in the valley, it feels as if you’re swimming in a sea of green. Visitors can fully enjoy the scenery of the primeval forest here, immerse themselves in the pristine and refreshing atmosphere of nature, and find the experience delightful and uplifting.
