Changbai Mountain Waterfall

On the northern side of Heaven Lake in Changbai Mountain, between the peaks of Tianhuo and Longmen, there is a large gap. This gap serves as the outlet for the lake. The water from Heaven Lake rushes out through this opening, and over time, the riverbed has been continuously eroded and deepened along the fault zone, eventually forming an enduring river. This river is called the "Chengcha River," also known as the Tongtian River.

The icy cold river water first meanders leisurely through a gently sloping section of about 600 meters, flowing gracefully as if dancing. Suddenly, the terrain steepens sharply to the north, and the once calm waters become impassioned—raging, surging, and roaring with an untamed ferocity. As it journeys forward, the river leaps and tumbles, and at a point approximately 1,250 meters from Heaven Lake, it is split by the massive Funiu Rock into two streams—one large and one small. From the cliff edge, these streams plunge 68 meters down in a breathtaking waterfall, framed by the natural rock barriers of the Jade Wall and Golden Wall, resembling two jade dragons descending from the heavens. During their descent, the two dragons intertwine, intensifying the force of the water as it fiercely devours protruding rocky outcrops, crashing into the deep pool below and sending up waves several meters high along with mist that rises dozens of feet into the air, creating the majestic spectacle of the Changbai Waterfall.

It then cuts through rugged gorges, thundering and surging forward over thousands of miles, with rapids and cascades that shake the earth and reach the sky. Clouds churn, rain pours, and the sound roars like drums and thunder, resembling a dragon overturning the seas, or a mighty herd of horses galloping forward. Over hundreds of years, the waterfall has carved out a pool at its base, nearly 20 meters deep. The water from the pool splashes outward like flowers scattered by a heavenly maiden, converging to form the Erdao Bai River, which is the main source of the Songhua River.
