Beijing Seismic Benchmark Station
Destination Introduction
The Beijing Seismic Benchmark Station is located in Baijiatuan, western suburbs of Beijing. Since 1957, starting from the International Geophysical Year, it has been conducting official observations and recordings of earthquakes and geomagnetism. As a first-class fundamental station in the national seismic network under the China Earthquake Administration, the Beijing Station utilizes various observation methods such as seismometry, geomagnetism, gravity, ground tilt, geothermal activity, water level, atmospheric potential, and electromagnetic waves. It serves as a key base for earthquake observation and geophysical experiments in China, and is also one of the main international stations for editing and exchanging seismic and geomagnetic data.
Visitors can observe the dynamic changes of the earth as they are being recorded on-site, browse rich and detailed audiovisual and pictorial materials, and even directly observe the response of recorders during ground shaking through interactive operations.
Through visits, lectures, and consultations, you can learn about the development of China’s earthquake science, psychological adjustment during an earthquake, and correct self-rescue and mutual rescue methods before and after seismic events, thereby mastering effective earthquake prevention measures. The Beijing Seismic Benchmark Station also functions as a science education base.
