Destination Introduction

The Beijing Institute of Forestry and Pomology is a professional institution in Beijing specializing in applied research and development in forestry and pomology. It has a history of 40 years and has made significant contributions to the forestry and fruit industry in Beijing and across the nation.

The institute operates the Beijing Natural Science Foundation’s Fruit Tree Stress Physiology Laboratory, Pomology Biotechnology Laboratory, Virus-Free Rapid Propagation Workshop for Fruit Tree Seedlings, and the Beijing High-Efficiency Quality Fruit and Seedling Scientific Research Pilot Base. It preserves over 2,000 germplasm resources of fruit trees and forest plants, and is home to the national germplasm repositories for peaches and strawberries.

The main research focus of the institute includes resources, breeding, cultivation, and biotechnology studies of stone fruits, primarily peaches (also including plums and cherries). It also conducts selection, breeding, and development research on grapes, strawberries, walnuts, chestnuts, jujubes, and unique forest resources. Currently, research on peach resources, breeding, and molecular-assisted breeding is at an advanced domestic level. Over 60 excellent varieties across four series—including ‘Ruiguang’ nectarine, ‘RuiPan’ flat peach, common peach, and canned yellow peach—are widely used in domestic production, with new varieties continuously being introduced. New grape varieties such as ‘Fenghou’ and ‘Xiangfei’, the strawberry series ‘Xingdu’, and outstanding walnut variety ‘Boxiang’ also have their own distinctive characteristics.

Admission: Adults 20 RMB, Students 10 RMB

Location: Located in Haidian District, Beijing

The orchards and nurseries within the institute, after years of careful cultivation and scientific management, are highly technologically advanced. The site hosts the national repositories for peach and strawberry germplasm resources. Varieties such as the Ruiguang stream peach, Xingdu series strawberries, and fresh eating grape varieties like Fenghou and Xiangfei enjoy high reputations both domestically and internationally. New technologies that integrate modern biotechnology and information science—such as drip irrigation, micro-sprinkler water-saving techniques, protected cultivation of fruit trees, virus-free techniques, and molecular detection of viruses—inject new vitality into traditional horticultural science.

The site also retains the ruins of the Rui Wang Tomb from the Qing Dynasty, and nearly 1,000 square meters of lawn surrounded by tall, upright white bark pines. There are also guest rooms, dining halls, bathrooms, and meeting rooms on the premises, making it an ideal place for scientific activities, labor exercises, and social gatherings. The site organizes annual summer environmental agriculture science education camps during the summer months.
