Shangdi Cherry Sightseeing Garden
The cherry orchard spans 150 acres and grows only cherries, primarily the Hongdeng, Hongmi, and Lapins varieties. In the center of the garden, a large canopy has been erected, beneath which sit two big pots that serve as the garden’s kitchen. On the east side of the park are small pavilions, with five or six arranged in a line, each featuring a small wood-fired stove made of yellow mud. Cooking here is done not with gas, but with firewood—preferably cherry branches pruned from the trees, which is said to make the dishes taste even better. Most of the cherries here are early-ripening varieties, so when cherries at other orchards are just beginning to color, those here are already ready to eat.
A large iron fence encloses the entire cherry orchard, and if you don’t venture inside, you might think it’s someone’s private fruit garden. Following a winding stone path through the tranquil garden, you’ll find wildflowers of unknown names growing beneath the cherry trees. From a distance, the red cherries, green leaves, and yellow blooms create a picturesque scene reminiscent of a 16th-century European oil painting. At this time, not all the fruits are fully ripe; some on the trees are red while others are still yellow, set against the lush green foliage—a sight so tempting you’ll be salivating even before taking a bite.
Transportation is very convenient; the orchard has a strong rustic charm, and the large wood-fired stoves are perfect for stew-style cooking, while the pavilions provide a great place to escape the heat. Pick a few pounds of cherries in the garden, then sit in a pavilion with a pot of tea, relaxing for half a day and enjoying a rare moment of leisure.
