China Film Museum
The China Film Museum is a science education base.
The China Film Museum is currently the world's largest national-level professional film museum. It is a landmark structure commemorating the 100th anniversary of Chinese cinema and serves as an artistic hall showcasing the century-long development of Chinese film, exhibiting film technology, promoting film culture, and facilitating academic exchange and research.
The China Film Museum features 20 exhibition halls that introduce the century-long development of Chinese cinema as well as a film technology expo. There are also temporary exhibition halls, a lecture hall, and a multi-function hall. The museum includes an IMAX theater, a digital cinema, and three 35mm film screening rooms.
The China Film Museum was designed through a collaboration between the American firm RTKL International and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design. Its architectural approach reflects a balance between cinematic art and architectural language, not only providing visitors with a three-dimensional visual impact but also immersing them as if within a film, elevating the intense visual effects into a comprehensive, all-encompassing experience.
The exterior of the China Film Museum is not only grand in scale but also rich in unique artistic character. In front of the main building, a massive screen and a staggered diagonal wall on the square form a flat composition resembling a clapperboard. The building uses black as the base color, with perforated metal panels as the outer decorative layer, casting a mysterious veil over this hall of light and shadow. Against the unified, neutral black background, each of the four facades features a large area of colored glass corresponding to the location of the building’s internal public spaces. The four functional areas—exhibition, exposition, cinema, and comprehensive services—are represented by the colors red, green, blue, and yellow, each exuding a vibrant individuality.
The interior of the China Film Museum uses black, white, and gray as its base tones, elegant and serene, making all other colors appear even more vivid against this backdrop: giant colored glass panels cast colorful shadows under natural light; the circular walls of the central rotunda, which continuously shift in color, are magnificent and bright; the decorative lighting inside the elevators dazzles, offering visitors delightful visual surprises during their tour.
Covering an area of 65 acres, the China Film Museum has a construction area of nearly 38,000 square meters and an exhibition line stretching 2,970 meters. It displays content related to over 1,500 films, more than 4,300 images, and introduces over 450 filmmakers. The exhibitions and displays at the China Film Museum were meticulously produced by a large group of the most authoritative experts and scholars in China’s film industry, organized by the state. They combine authority, knowledge, and artistry.
