Shenyang Xinmin Mosque

The Shenyang Xinmin Mosque is a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level in Xinmin City.

The Xinmin Mosque is located in Xinmin City. Originally built in 1765 (the 30th year of the Qianlong reign), the original mosque consisted entirely of earthen buildings. It was renovated during the Guangxu era, when the earthen structures were replaced with brick-and-wood constructions.

The mosque faces east and is enclosed by blue-brick walls, covering an area of 2,673 square meters. Its main structures include the front porch, prayer hall, rear hall, and north-south side rooms. The front porch has three bays, featuring a hip-and-gable roof with a rolled eave, topped with blue tiles. It is 13.7 meters wide and 5.6 meters deep, with wooden structures adorned with painted ornaments. At the center above the front porch hangs an Arabic plaque. The prayer hall consists of five bays, with a flush gable roof and blue tiles. It is 20 meters wide and 9.8 meters deep, with three doors on the front façade. The door lintels are hung with three ancient plaques: the left one inscribed with “Excellence in Purity and Unity,” the middle one with “Rectify Self, Rectify Others,” and the right one inscribed by Zuo Baogui, the Shengjing military commander, reading “Sincerity and Reverence.” Inside the western wall of the hall, at the center, is a small square room that forms the rear hall. Also known as the Moon-Gazing Tower, the rear hall is a three-story pavilion approximately 20 meters tall. The first floor is built of brick, measuring 6.7 meters wide and 5.4 meters deep. On the western wall inside the hall, there is a central shrine flanked by murals painted on the walls. At each corner of the rear hall stands a vertical column reaching up to the second-floor square pavilion. The upper level features wooden windows and railings, with a pyramidal roof crowned by four hips, double eaves, and gray tiles, along with ridge decorations of mythical creatures.

On the north and south sides of the mosque are hard-gable roofed, blue-brick side rooms built for the imam’s living quarters, scripture lectures, and ritual ablutions. Since its renovation during the Guangxu era, the mosque has not undergone any further major repairs. Due to years of neglect, the buildings have deteriorated significantly, and parts of the north-south side rooms have been demolished. After 1978, funding from the municipal and county governments enabled gradual restoration of the mosque's halls. Currently, the main structures—including the front porch, prayer hall, and rear hall—are largely well-preserved. It is now a cultural heritage site protected at the county level in Xinmin.

Driving route: From Shenyang, enter the Liaozhong Line Expressway and drive 10.6 km. Exit at Xinmin, then get on G102 Highway — Liaohe Street — downtown Xinmin — Nanjiao Road — Zhanqian Street. Continue for 1.1 km to arrive.
