Gongzhutun Houshan Site

The Gongzhutun Houshan Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Liaoning Province.

The Gongzhutun Houshan Site is located in Gongzhutun Village, Gongzhutun Town, Xinmin City, Shenyang, and dates back to the Bronze Age.

Discovered in 1979, the site covers an area of approximately 150,000 square meters. The surface exposes a large number of pottery shards, vessel ears, and feet, while ancient house foundations, ash pits, and tombs have been found on the cliffs in the southeastern part. The cultural layer at this site reaches a thickness of 2 meters and is very rich in cultural content. One type belongs to the Neolithic Age sites and tombs, primarily featuring sand-tempered red pottery and reddish-brown pottery with high firing temperatures and no decorative patterns.

Vessel ears are generally plate-shaped or bridge-shaped, often decorated with grid-like incised patterns. Vessel feet are mostly conical or flat solid types. Identifiable vessel shapes include tripods, li tripods, pots, steamers, jars, bowls, cups, and spinning whorls. In addition, a small number of early Neolithic pottery shards with impressed "Zhi" character patterns and incised patterns have also been discovered. The tombs are single-person earthen pit vertical shaft graves, with burial positions including both flexed and extended postures. Burial objects usually consist of one pot and one bowl. The other type represents the Bronze Age culture, classified as the Zhengjiawazi type, yielding pottery, polished stone axes, and stone sword handles. Most of the pottery is sand-tempered brown ware, with vessel shapes such as deep-bellied large-mouthed round-rimmed flat-bottomed jars, hollow-footed li tripods, and pottery basins. The upper layer of the site also contains a large number of artifacts from the Han Dynasty and the Liao-Jin periods. This site provides clues for studying the Gaotaishan Culture and Zhengjiawazi Culture, and is of significant importance for researching the Neolithic to Bronze Age cultures of the Liao River Basin.

On June 11, 2008, the Gongzhutun Houshan Site was announced by the People’s Government of Liaoning Province as part of the Eighth Batch of Provincial-Level Protected Cultural Heritage Sites in Liaoning.

Protected Area: With the water tower center as the base point, extending 250 meters east to Provincial Highway 106, 200 meters south, and 300 meters west and north respectively.

Construction Control Zone: A Class I construction control zone within 100 meters outside the protected area.
