Chengzitan Modern Architectural Complex

The Chengzitan Modern Architectural Complex is located on Chunman Street, Chunman Community, Chengzitan Subdistrict, Pulandian District. Originally built during the Qing Dynasty, it is a provincial-level cultural heritage site.

The Chunman Street where the complex is situated was known as "Fish Market Street" in the early 20th century. It was built in 1905 after the Russo-Japanese War when the Japanese organized local workers to carve a road through the mountains along the southern bank of the Diaoqiao River. According to *Records of Guandong Province*, in the early winter each year, dozens of sailboats capable of carrying around 100 dan (a traditional unit of volume) would often moor there. Due to the immense commercial potential, fish markets, grocery stores, silk shops, restaurants, and inns sprang up near the riverbank. By 1920, it had developed into a bustling port, with shop roofs aligned closely together and business thriving.

The environmental landscape and spatial layout of the Chengzitan Modern Architectural Complex are highly distinctive, characterized mainly by “small river, suspension bridge, reeds, and tiled houses,” as well as the neat and uniform streets and the well-organized houses and courtyards along them. The riverside buildings, together with the suspension bridge and the river, create a warm and pleasant living environment full of life.

The Chengzitan Modern Architectural Complex has largely preserved the architectural style of traditional residences in southern Liaoning from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period. It is one of the larger, well-preserved complexes in the Dalian area that boasts distinct characteristics of its era, holding significant historical, artistic, and scientific value. In 2010, Chengzitan Town was designated as a provincial-level historical and cultural town by the People’s Government of Liaoning Province, and in 2014, the Chengzitan Modern Architectural Complex was announced as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites.
